Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

This worked for me on 8 different Gmail accounts. The glitch happened last night 26Dec19 when I installed a Mojave upgrade.

Note: I am running Mojave 10.14.6, Safari 12.1.2, and Mail 12.4 which may be why it was this simple.

  1. In "Mail," click on the tilde next to the account now connecting. It will pop up a box saying, "Enter the password for the account “**************@gmail.com”. Click on "Open Safari"
  2. Now you see "Sign in to continue to Mac OS." Don't - It's a loop. Instead click on "Create Account" at the bottom.
  3. Don't create a new account. Look below (lower left) and click on "Sign in Instead." It will reopen a log-in box for your Google account.

4. Log in to Google with your email and password (two pop up boxes in a row).

5. It will pop up Google’s "Protect your account." Click on "Confirm"

6. New pop up window, "macOS wants to access your Google Account." Click on "Allow."

Your “Mail” screen will pop to the front and the tilde will be gone. Your mail will now function. Do a test and it should come through.

For those using the same specs as my Mac, hope this works for you also. Since I had 8 accounts to fix, it seems true (but it was one laptop with particular specs). I actually stumbled upon trying this before any solution offered - God's grace maybe. If it works for you, send Him a "thanks."

Merry Christmas!

I'm having the same problem that most people are reporting on this thread -- one of my G Suite accounts is stuck in the endless authentication loop, and another one is fine.

I only use contacts on my Mac for "endless loop" account, so here's a temporary workaround that's working for me:

  • Delete the Google account entry for it in System Preferences
  • Re-add it as a CardDAV account. Choose manual configuration. The server address is google.com and the username is your G Suite email address. I use two factor authentication for my G Suite account, so I had to generate an app password to use in the password field here; if you don't use two factor auth, your plain old G Suite password should work.

After that, contact syncing works for me without the endless prompts.

While I only care about contacts, I suspect that you could repeat this process adding an IMAP and a CalDAV account to get access to Mail and Calendar as well.

Hopefully Apple fixes this issue soon so that we can go back to using a single, "standard" Google account.

Addition - On my Mac that's at home, it prompted me to update my password which I did, after having changed it earlier this morning thinking this was the problem and it isn't and now my laptop and phone are out of commission for email. At hom I just entered the updated password and it's fine. It seems that when deleting and re-adding which is the usual fix, makes it worse.

I am with you, an Apple enthusiast and also probably your age. My first MAC I got in 1985. I also had a long career on TV, making big shows, and can tell you it is related. This is not just a bug, but a release that was rushed to coincide with he + launches. The bug has been there since the Beta version, so no reason to release. Tim Cooks is Hollywood struck, seduced, seen it over and over. This is not the only missed step of late. We can go on for hours. The point is that there is no solution to the bug unless it comes from Apple, maybe tomorrow, maybe a week. Who knows if the even recognize it. But I understand position, I am a loyalist too.

I don't see how this editorial is helpful: Gmail works just fine with third party email apps, and the authentication flow isn't compromised. This only happens with Mail.app, Calendar.app and the internet accounts feature in System Preferences. The problem has only arisen since 10.14.4 was released, and it doesn't affect all G Suite / Gmail accounts, only some (I have two for example, both set up the same way, and one works, one doesn't).

Interestingly, I note that OAuth flows in other products sometimes go in an endless loop as well - for example, Disqus. The only thing I have divined is that these flows *always* go through a private browsing pop-up window in Safari, and they don't always "hand back" to the invoking system properly (i.e. Mail.app or whatever).

Updated two Macs to 10.14.4 and right away one of my gmail accounts (the GSuite One) wanted to me to enter a new password and that goes into an endless loop. I could get the free gmail account to work. Initially the iPhone and iPad worked after updated to iOS 12.4, but when I changed the passwords on my two Gmail accounts, they could not longer work for either the free gmail account and the Gsuite gmail account and trying to update the passwords on iOS devices just dropped me back to the initial screen to add an email. Tried deleting accounts on Mac and iOS and re-add. Tried to clear the keychain of all items that contain gmail. Nothing works. I have had install the Gmail app on iOS and use webmail on the Macs to get my email.

Got out an old iPad and used it to change my Gsuite gmail account to the new password and IT WORKED, so the issue is changes in MacOS and iOS that don't work with the Google Authentication process. It might be that Google needs to make some change but it was Apple that released new MacOS and iOS updates, to support the release of Apple News+, that had this bug that had not yet been resolved in beta testing. So far no word from Apple despite 3 days and posts all over the internet on this issue.

I had this problem myself. Of three gmail accounts, it seems to affect only Gsuite accounts (the account affected was for a domain that I am the admin for so I can confirm that it was Gsuite only.

The workaround that the Google customer service rep helped me come up with involved turning off two-factor authentication, then deleting the account and setting it up as a manually set up mail account (using imap.gmail.com as the incoming server and smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing server).

This should tide us over until Apple comes up with a fix.

Hey,

Last night I found this https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/7649685?hl=en using Exchange type account.

It works fine on my iOS, both iPhone and iPad.

Still for MacOS won't work the Exchange option, so I'll wait for some solution and using the browser instead.

At least I have the iOS Calendar updated so I'm not missing any appointments alerts.

Hope you can find this useful.

Good luck!

Yes it does work now. The "Charles Proxy" solution worked flawlessly and soon after quickly things seemed to be resolved. I was thrilled to go through that setup successfully because it's good education. Everyone needs education right? (thanks to the original poster). I paid for a Charles license because it's a very cool application. It will come in handy in the future.

Dear all, I found a workaround that can be helpful until Apple releases a fix for MacOS Apple Mail.

Important: for those users who have two factor authentication enabled on their Gmail or G Suite accounts, there's no need to disable 2FA on your accounts to apply the configurations I'll describe below

Basically you will have to remove you existing Gmail account from Apple Mail and reconfigure the account as a new IMAP account.

A- Those G Suite users who have 2FA enable will have to make sure that "less secure apps is enable" for their accounts.

1. Login to your G Suite Admin Console(admin.google.com).

2. After that go to Security > Basic Settings > Go to settings for less secure apps ››

3. Select the middle option 'Allow users to manage their access to less secure apps'.

4. Save changes.

Once this is done, please do the following

1. Go to Gmail.com

2. Login to your source G Suite account

3. Open a new Tab

4. Go to this URL https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps

5. Toggle the Less secure apps option and make sure it's enabled.

B- Create an App Password for your Mail App (16-digit passcode)

Instructions here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833

C- After this is done, remove the affected G Suite account from Mac Apple Mail and add it back again manually instead of selecting 'Google' option by using the settings and steps listed as per this Help Center support article https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en

Important notice: Please be mindful that IMAP protocol only syncs you emails and not contacts & calendars.
