Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

UPDATE:

I contacted Apple and spoke with a tech support person, shared my screen so he could see what was happening. He verified that it is legit. Continuing with the process for each account, I was able to get my accounts online.

IF for some reason you do not get the prompt, click the sideways lightning strike (my description) next to the account that's offline, and you should then get the prompts to authenticate.

This might have coincided with with G+ shutdown, as from what I gather, GSuite authentication is tied to G+ APIs. So, authentication was transitioned from G+ to another method, and it wasn't a 1 to 1 transition, and it was a gradual one. This was indeed poor coordination between the companies, and for the most part Google is to blame. I anticipate that Apple switched to new APIs a bit too early, and Google wasn't prepared. Second, there are some inconsistencies, as if you have backup email for your GSuite account, for some reason, that's what's going to be picked up by Apple, as opposed to your actual email; one of my Gsuite accounts doesn't even list my primary account, just aliases. These are all bugs from ongoing shutdown of G+.

Sure. I had to reauthenticate gmail just once — right after installing 10.14.4.

The nagging issue of Mail losing touch with gmail, as I think about it, has been around for a while — only not nearly as bad as it is now. I know that very occasionally I had Mail try to convince me that gmail was offline, always after bringing up the screen after being minimized, and had to restart Mail. But now the issue has become MUCH worse. If it matters, my machine is a Fall 2018 MacBook Pro,

By the way, I don't use GSuite or any other google service other than gmail.

I am having the same issue where I had authenticate all my gmail emails and additionally I am having internet issues. I keep thinking my wifi is out, but it's not. Internet/WiFi stops working and I have to restart the computer. (MacBook Pro 2017). Restarting Safari does not work. And I even tried Foxfire the second this happened and that didn't work either.

I have an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) connected to the WIFI of my work and it happens to me. I spent a couple of days trying to solve it. But finally.....

What did I do and works for me?

  1. I set mi iPhone as "personal Hotspot".
  2. I connected my iMac to internet trough my iPhone. Not my work's wifi.
  3. I did the authentication in Safari without any problem

That is it...!!!! good luck

Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer .

Most easiest way without downloading and deleting accounts.

  1. Go to your gmail account in browser.
  2. There is a little gear in your gmail under all emails (I did this way so explain step by step from my side)
  3. Choose Settings under that gear
  4. Choose Account and Imports
  5. Choose Other Google Account settings
  6. Choose Review your privacy settings.
  7. Choose device information. If it is Turned off - you need t click on it and turn it ON. If it is ON, You can turn it off and again turn it on.
  8. Do not logout. Go to Mail and Click on Lighting icon near your account.
  9. Click everything it will ask.
  10. In browser you will see an option to "Allow". Click it and DONE. It will finish authentication smoothly.

Process takes 2 minutes. All calendar info and emails will stay with no issues. I hope it will works fine after as well.

@Yana131 re: 4/23/19 7:05PM response beginning: "Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer..." I appreciate the time and effort. My problem is that I do not want Google to store the information from my device. I have always had this "device" setting off (pause) and until 10.14.4 there was never any problem. If the device setting is on, then: "Device Information stores info about your contacts, calendars, apps, music, audio files, movies, books, and other data from your devices. It also stores diagnostic info about your devices, like the battery level, the quality and duration of network connections, touchscreen and sensor readings, and crash reports." That's not what I want Google to have. So it's still an Apple issue. I realize there are highly technical solutions that have been suggested here, but that doesn't help the vast majority of Mac users who are not tech savvy. Again, though, thanks for taking the time and I hope it works for others.

I got off the phone with a supervisor (no point messing with a rookie) and he said that it has always been this way but they wanted to make it clear with they were doing. Apparently lawyers had it deep into the terms of service. Could be the new EU privacy issues. I think Google and Apple is collecting data. duhh.

I made the supervisor do a screen share every single click. He did help. And he kept his cool when I was "angry"

I asked him if Apple would either pay me for my time or put up a Into to this stupid box that says "hey... we always had your data and contacts but .... we didn't make it clear. So sorry for pulling a Facebook.

Now I am doing the MB pro myself and

TeresaC7,

funny you raise this. The timing seems right for me, too, with Facebook - while I can login and so on, I notice my newsfeed is truncated.

A year or so ago, this was caused by a password app called Dashlane. That is now fixed but it showed me that problems in one thing can be caused by another completely different app. I hope apple finds a fix for this idiocy soon. None of the fixes work for long although I must say my email still rolls in. It's as though gmail is 'paused' rather than completely offline.
