iTunes does not allow me to select some audiobooks for sync

iTunes is not managing my audiobooks correctly. When I attempt to select audiobooks to sync to my phone, some of them cannot be selected. On the page to select audiobooks to sync, those that can be selected show the list of mp3 files that make up the audiobook while those that can NOT be selected don't show any files at all. (See two images below.)

Any ideas what is causing this issue? I verified all the files are present in my library. I can play all audiobooks from my computer. I see no difference in the file structure between the books that can and can't be synced.

iTunes version 12.9.4.94

Mac OS Mojave 10.14.4

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS 10.14

Workaround:

Copy your audiobook files to a location outside of your iTunes library folder.

Delete the issue audiobooks from iTunes, and select to move files to trash.

Import the copied files back into iTunes

Alternate workaround:

Convert audio files to a different format following instructions here.

New songs appear in library as a music album. Find the album in your library.

Delete the original Audiobook album from your library

Select the new music album of your book, press Command + I

Go to Options tab > set Media Kind Audiobook

I spoke to Apple support. They are aware of this problem that was caused when they changed something about the way iTunes manages files a few years ago. There is no universal solution. You must individually re-import or convert every file to get them working again.
