iMovie is unable to import 60fps videos to timeline

Hi.

I have recorded 4K/60fps videos on my iPhone. When I play the videos from my Event Library in iMovie, the video is 4K/60fps, but as soon as I add the video to my timeline it changes to 4K/30fps.

I am aware that the resolution and fps of the project, is determined by the first video you add to the timeline. That is not the issue here.

I have seen other people reporting it as well, but haven't been able to find a solution. People are suggesting deleting the imovie settings by pressing CMD + Option when opening iMovie, but that didn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

I am using iMovie on my mac. I haven't tried the iOS app. My mac is a Macbook Pro 13" 2016 with touch bar.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

Peter,

I am familiar with the thread that you cite, having contributed to it myself.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8145780

The poster there is the only user I know of who has said he can share a 4k 60fps video. We don't know the complexity of his movie nor his computer specs and graphics card. In view of his post I suggested that you try sharing out your video with the 4k option even though it does not specify 60 fps. You have found no success with that option. It takes about 10-12 mbps to support 4k 60fps, but iMovie's custom settings I believe go only to 9.3. You can try the maximum custom setting and see if that makes any difference, although if your clip is being changed to 30fps in the timeline it probably won't.

Until we get more evidence that 4k 60fps can be exported by iMovie I think we have to go with Apple's literature, that does not say 4k 60fps is supported. 4k 30fps is supported, and 1080 60fps is supported.

Hopefully with a future upgrade Apple will provide 4k 60fps support.

Peter,

I obtained a 4k 60fps sample clip and did some testing.

When the 4k 60fps clip was imported into iMovie 10.1.11 it changed to 4k 30fps. Project settings showed 4k. So your findings are confirmed.

When shared out at Best Quality (pro res) settings it rendered at 4k 30fps.

When shared out at custom settings, 38.912 Mbps, it still rendered at 4k 30fps.

From my limited testing I conclude that iMovie supports 4k 30 fps but not 4k 60fps.

How did you verify that your clip changed to 30fps? Try sharing it out and see if the resulting movie is 60fps.

I've not seen any official literature indicating that iMovie supports editing 4k videos at 60fps. It does support 4k 30 fps. I have heard that it can export 4k 60fps from the browser view, but have not tested that myself. So, it might be that there is no solution to this as yet.

Hi

When I move the clip from the event library to the timeline, you can clearly see that it is 30fps. Also if you click the settings button it says that the movie is 4K and not 4K/60.

When i export the movie I don't have a 60fps options - Not even a 1080p/60fps option. If I instead tries to export a 1080p/60fps movie, then I have the 60fps options.

Another weird thing is that 4K videos I export to youtube are only 1080p when uploaded (Yes - I have selected 4K output when exporting :) )

I found another thread describing a similar problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8375034

Apr 11, 2019 4:39 AM in response to QuickTimeKirk

It says:

"You can edit and share video in high-quality formats like 4k and 60 fps with iMovie on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac."

and

"Choose 4K (for a 4K video) or one of the 60 fps options (for a 60 frames per second video) as the export size. iMovie exports your video to the Photo Library in the Photos app."

I can't find any documentation from Apple that says that iMovie doesn't support 4K/60fps.

I found this though:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8145780

A user says that iMovie exports it as 4K/60 although it only states it as 4K in the export options
