5S IPhone Very High battery drain--MapQuest app running in background.

Consider this if you have a Very High battery drain. I have an iPhone 5S but it could any iPhone. About 4-5 updates ago I started having very high battery drain on my iPhone 5S. Battery usage might drop from 80% to 10% or 2% within a fraction of a second. Plug it into power & it might jump back to 70% in a fraction of a second. I had knowingly made no settings changes.

I had a new battery installed by Apple. Same high battery usage continued but seemed a little better. Most recently while I was asleep with both Cellular & WiFi turned OFF the battery would get hot & I would use a full 100% battery charge in 6-8 hours.

With the update to 12.1.4 I looked at the battery usage feature & found that while I might have 15-20 minutes of total usage for items other than MapQuest; MapQuest, with Cellular & WiFi turned off might use 200 minutes or more in the background. My best guess is that MapQuest was trying to function for location even though Cell & WiFi was turned off.

I did not find much online about how to turn MapQuest off or even about MapQuest. Search for MapQuest & usually Apple or Google locators pop up. Finally I went into the MapQuest app & turned off everything I could find. I like MapQuest & if I need it I will turn features back on. If things go South again I will remove the program entirely.

I am still evaluating but in general it looks as if MapQuest running in the background, even with WiFi & cellular turned off was just eating up battery power extremely rapidly. I suppose any program app could do this but if you have a rapid battery drain & the battery is good, look at the battery usage under settings and see what is actually using all of that battery power. (And Apple, stop throwing bright screen into everything. My screen brightness is set where I like it & has been for years & has not changed. That is not a reason for high battery usage. If I can't use the screen brightness the way I want to use it, why have the iPhone?)

Thanks for the reply but my issue was not about regular battery usage but about "abnormally high" battery usage. I think the battery feature which shows activity since the 10 days when a full 100% charge was last done better illustrates my frustration. In those 10 days ALL features EXCEPT MapQuest used about 200 "minutes" of battery power.

In those 10 days (really 8 or 9 because I stopped whatever in MapQuest was running that I could on the 8th or 9th day) MapQuest, running "in the background only" & during much of the time when both Cell & WiFi was turned off used almost 91 HOURS (5,460 minutes) of battery power. Again I am still testing but it looks as if MapQuest was the culprit & I would not have found it if not for the battery usage feature. I have used MapQuest for many years & have never had such an issue before.

Protect & Prolong life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. Put on Low Power Mode
  2. Put Auto Lock On (1 min):- with low power mode it will be 30 Sec
  3. Put Auto Answer Off
  4. Disable Push notifications for apps you do not use often
  5. Enable Auto Brightness:- Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Auto-Brightness [Enable]
  6. Manually lower brightness from Control Center
  7. If you Want to watch continuous Video. Stream it on TV or a Monitor
  8. Don't force close apps; Apps which are not on frontend screen are paused by the system to save energy. Apps require more energy to re-launch. Apps which are open in the background use large memory is a myth and quitting them is counterproductive
  9. Location services to be allowed only while using the app
  10. Set your iPhone to fetch email and calendar data from internet less frequently
  11. Turning off Background App Refresh
  12. Charge before it drops below 20-30%
  13. Try connecting to trusted Wifi where ever available in stead of Cellular
  14. Enable Airplane mode in areas with bad cellular and wifi coverage. Your phone keeps trying for reconnection with the missing / weak network. This uses lot of energy
  15. Switch off Wifi & Bluetooth while in Roaming or Not in Range
  16. Enable "Wifi Assist" : Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Assist [Enable]
  17. Periodically Check your Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)
