iPhone XS Max software too old to sync

Was thrilled to get my new iPhone XS Max. Haven't had a new phone in like 3 years. Backed up old phone, iPhone 7 plus. Went to iTunes to restore back up on new iPhone. Immediately got an error message that the "software on the new phone was too old to sync." Anyone have an idea??

Yes, it can happen in this situation (example):

You created a backup of your old iP7+ running latest iOS version (12.2).

Your new iPXS Max could run an older iOS version (i.e. 12.1.4)

To restore data from a backup, your new iPhone MUST run a version > or = to the one used when you created your backup.

Update your XS Max, then restore from your existing backup.
