Time Machine back up failing

Time Machine backup fails on a daily basis, but does complete backups intermittently: I see these errors: " error occurred creating backup folder" also unable to find backup device. Using a WD 4 TB My Passport drive. MAC OS is Mojave 10.14.4. My iMac is new latest model. I have turned off the sleep mode on the WD. I have changed usb cables. Not sure if this is a drive issue or Mac software. Appreciate suggestions

iMac 27", macOS 10.14

Please read Time Machine troubleshooting on Mac. The symptoms you describe point to several possible causes but the most common one is that the Time Machine backup disk is operating in a state of failure. The solution is to replace it.

Confirm that suspicion by connecting a different Time Machine backup disk.

Great!

You can continue to use the older one until you decide its behavior has become intolerable. Just don't rely upon it. An additional new drive would be an excellent idea. Time Machine can back up to as many as you wish.

For some reason larger capacity drives don't seem to last as long as smaller capacity drives. That's just my own unscientific observation.
