CarPlay and Siri Issues 2019 Honda Pilot

I took delivery of a 2019 Honda Pilot Black Edition (Touring) in November 2018. Initially CarPlay was working as designed and expected. I’ll preface that by saying that I came out of an 18 VW Atlas and a 17 Honda Pilot as well all of which worked flawlessly with CarPlay.

About a a month after driving the vehicle, CarPlay and more specifically Siri, stopped working. Pressing and holding the Siri button on the steering wheel resulted in a 30 second pause while Siri was trying to respond only to be met with a message saying I’m sorry I can’t process your request at this time or something along those lines. This behavior is exhibited in Maps, Phone, Messages whether I use the steering wheel or the microphone on the truck’s screen. What’s strange is that when I unplug the phone and use Siri via the steering wheel it works as it’s supposed to and Siri will compose text messages or pull up directions. Obviously this isn’t ideal and the system isn’t doing what it’s supposed to as I would need to use my phone to see the Map, again not what CarPlay is supposed to do.

After spending the better part of 4 hours on numerous phone calls with a Senior Tech Support Advisor from Apple and about the same time running back and forth to my local Honda dealer I’m left with Apple saying it’s an issue on Honda’s end and Honda pointing the finger at Apple. I have done everything possible including official Apple lightning cables (3 of them), resetting infotainment system in the Pilot, wiping my phone clean via iTunes and setting it up as a new phone and while functionality does come back it’s typically not for more than 5 minutes then it reverts to the issue I’ve listed above. I’m running iOS 12.2 on an iPhone XS Max and the vehicles infotainment system is also up to date.

My question is whether anyone else has seen CarPlay behave this way on their own 19 Pilot as I’m at a complete loss for what to do. As I commute roughly 2 plus hours a day it’s imperative that this work as our Distracted Driving Laws are very strict (as they should be).

Thanks in advance.

I think you might just have pinged the cause of problem. Your original description seemed to be shouting “problem with external connectivity” when I started reading down the thread, and I half remembered there could be an onboard WiFi in some Hondas. First point, CarPlay is simply an interface for remote operation of your iPhone. Second point, Siri has to connect to internet for most actions and the failure described is exactly what I would expect when Siri can’t see internet. I got a similar response recently when I was in a cellular black spot.

My guess from the various descriptions is the phone has managed to connect to/through the vehicle WiFi instead of directly using your iPhone calling plan’s data - and now for whatever reason the vehicle’s hotspot is not passing the Siri traffic back to Apple’s backend servers (could this be a trial data subscription expired?).

Smartphones will almost always use a WiFi connection in preference to cellular data because it is considered to be “cheaper” in the routing settings. I see a similar problem from time to time in my work environment, where a broadband router (with WiFi) has lost its phone line for DSL. Not only do they lose computer connectivity, but suddenly all the smartphones and iPads lose their internet access because they are still connected to a WiFi which has no outside connection. Fix - disable WiFi on the cellular devices until the DSL is restored.

One way to investigate this theory would be to somehow disable your phone’s ability to connect to the vehicle hotspot, so it is forced to use cellular data direct from the phone to your network - not through the vehicle’s service. Options for this seem to include simply turning the phone’s WiFi off in Settings (not Control Center), disabling the car’s hotspot (look in the car menus), set a password on the car’s hotspot, or if the hotspot already has a password, change the password and don’t tell your phone.

Hopefully this offers a few clues to help you find the underlying issue and get it resolved.

I too have recently taken delivery of a 2019 Honda Pilot and use a fully updated iPhone 7s plus. About a week ago Siri only failed to work now and then. Now it pretty much doesn't work, exactly as described by others in this thread.

I too have gone through the process of spending hours with Apple Support and even gone to wiping the phone OS and starting anew. Zero success. Cables swapped , brand new Apple supplied. Honda Canada were pretty much clueless and did the usual referral to the dealer. I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer regarding what the latest radio firmware version is.

I figured the same as the previous commentator the car should be nothing but a dumb terminal with Siri working within the phone. I turned off wifi on the phone and ensured as far as possible that no wifi was running on the car either, made no difference. The thing is other services that also require data such as navigation appear to be working without a problem. It would appear that when Carplay is connected the Siri service stops working. Incoming calls are unaffected

Internet searches have revealed many more people with new Honda vehicles having the same difficulty and getting no resolution to this problem from either Apple or Honda.

It's frustrating but right now if you need to make calls when driving then use bluetooth and don't connect Carplay.

As far as I found so far, it appears that only new Honda vehicles are affected which all appear to use the same radio unit. Pilot Odyssey and Passport I have read about. I understand Honda has had a problem with these radios going dead. Now whether that is something to do with it I do not know but the dealer, Honda corporate and Apple are simply trying to pass the buck and each ask you to contact the other.

Hi I own am2019 Honda Insight. I purchased my car in October 2018. My carplay worked for 1 month. Then I started having issues. I started getting a black screen when using Waze thru car play. Then I would lose CarPlay for no reason. I reset a few times and even went to the dealer. This was a high selling point for this car. Today Service told me Honda is working on an update. He made it sound as though it won’t be fixed soon. Very disappointing.

I have a 2019 Insight and a 2019 Pilot - the Insight has minor sporadic issues with CarPlay, but the Pilot is of course having the exact issue discussed here - with both of our phones (I have an iPhone XS and my wife has an iPhone 8 Plus - both updated to latest iOS). We have had the same discussion with our local dealer/service department and have received the same indication that a fix is being worked on. It is a shame that this has taken so long to reach a resolution - the worst issue that we have experienced is that in almost 100% of calls placed or received through CarPlay, the connection will abruptly stop after a few minutes and the call will be transferred back to the device via speaker, or through Bluetooth if connected (which coincidentally is also sporadic).

As as many have also said, we are currently thinking of switching vehicles because of the issue - which sounds ridiculous but these days the functionality is really a core feature for vehicles and needs to work. Unfortunately after conducting other research I have seen that this and other similar issues present themselves in other manufacturers vehicles as well, and I have seen Android Auto mentioned in the same vein.

Very unfortunate because in the Insight I can use CarPlay as designed for the most part and it is a fantastic feature. I really hope that Honda and Apple can quickly determine what the conflict is and get the system working properly. Unfortunately for the vehicle owners there really isn’t any recourse at this time. Has anyone actually traded or sold their new vehicle back to Honda because of this? Wondering how that process went and if they are providing any sort of additional buyback value since there is a substantial known issue here.

My 2016 Pilot (leased) did not have Car Play. However, I follow this thread because I have had the same problem with my 2019 CR-V, EX-L, until my local dealer performed a full software update to the vehicle.

Now that we're home from our summer driving vacation though, I don't plug in my Apple 6+ that often. However, when I do try to access Siri through the button on the left side of the steering wheel, I almost always hear, "I'm sorry. I'm having trouble connecting to the Internet. Please try again in several moments." This happens with almost every first attempt to make a call. So when does it work? "Sometimes," is the only honest answer I can give you. Some days, I have to pick up my phone and make he call manually!

With thousands of Honda customers, driving multiple Honda models, all having the same or similar problems, yet other makes, such a Nissan (rented a Rogue in Cincinnati last December) have not seen these repeated problems, it's fairly clear that Honda has not stepped up to the plate to settle this matter. My dealership is one owned by Rick Hendrick and he runs a tight ship! I cannot say enough about the employees there and the dealership's philosophy to care for each and every customer. That said, I've decided to write to Mr. Hendrick and ask for assistance for this problem.

I started having trouble getting Siri to work with my Honda 2017 CRV.

I recently had the infotainment unit flashed at the dealership with the latest software to address dimming and runaway volume issues.

Since then, Siri doesn't work correctly. When I press the button on the steering wheel, Siri beeps through the car's speakers, but after speaking, I get the 'I am having trouble with the connection'.

I don't think it's an issue with which wifi hotspot the phone or car are connected to.

What I have noticed is that on the phone, the car play splash screen has a bluetooth icon, and when I click on that, there are two handsfree connections, both named the same.

I think the issue is that the microphone audio is being passed back to the phone on the other bluetooth connection.

If I invoke siri from the phone, then everything works fine - e.g. siri works as expected.

If I disconnect the phone and delete the connections on the car and the phone, and reconnect, things work for a while, but then this behaviour starts again.

How can I remove the second erroneous bluetooth connection?

The update came in as a “software update” on my oddyseys in dash radio... when parked in my driveway, its connected to my house wifi... as for the phone, my iPhone updated automatically when new iOS 13 came out recently... i really wish i can tell you i did something special, but it was just prompted updates.

everything has since been running smoothy.

hope this helps

I have had the same issue as all of you. I could have written the above posts almost word for word with the experience I've had (2019 Pilot Touring, Siri/Reading text messages to me/error free phone calling all worked for 3 weeks and then it didn't, repeated efforts with Honda Car Tech team on site and 800-number to try to fix it, system resets multiple times, checking for updates, test driving another 2019 and seeing the functions work on that one today, etc.). I told the dealership today that it needs to be escalated even further, and plan to pursue this with Honda's legal department. I bought the 2019 in Sept 2018, and have had this problem unresolved since October 2018, despite multiple, constant and ongoing efforts to get assistance. Apple - Please let me know if you hear of a solution!

I took delivery in Sep 2018 of a 2019 Honda Pilot Elite. I transitioned from an Audi Q5 to this vehicle which provided to be much bigger and affordable. There are many frustrations with the Honda however, that have me convinced I will never buy another Honda. The same thing is happening to me, CarPlay is the most frustrating feature when Siri doesn't work.. what's the point of true "hands free" if you can't connect hands free?? The button to pop the back hatch doesn't work, radio stations take forever to load and sit in an "inquiring" state for far too long, garage door opener randomly stopped working. They are small features but creature comforts and the things I use the most.... grrrrrr... Thanks for letting me vent!!!

Hi Chocolatenut,

I feel your pain and agree that there appears to be quite a few gremlins with the 2019 version of the Pilot. My 2017 had zero issues for the 10 months that I drove it. From everything I’ve read as well as what I’ve been told by my local dealer a lot of it revolves around the infotainment system that Honda went with for the current model year. I believe it shares the same system as the 19 Odyssey which is plagued with stereo issues. That being said my issue with CarPlay not working hasn’t resurfaced since April 29th when I posted the solution. While it’s not an ideal process to get it to work (it should be plug in and go), it does work and Siri has been working the way it’s supposed to.

Best of luck!

I purchased a new 2019 CR-V EX-L in April 2019. This was after many years of leading Honda Pilots, the last one was a 2016 EX-L that did not have CarPlay. I also have an Apple iPhone 6Plus running, iOS 12.3.1.

The first couple of weeks the Carplay worked OK, as long as the phone was connected via a certified Apple cable. Strangely, the other day, I happened to be reading the manual about something the different, when I read that even if your iPhone is not connected via a cable, that simply by pressing the "voice-activation" button on the steering wheel, CarPlay will appear on the video screen. Tried it....several times. And guess what? BOGUS!!! It never worked on its own!

So, when you two children (Honda & Apple) can stop arguing with each other, maybe it's time you take care of your thousands (perhaps, tens or hundreds of thousands) who have paid good money for your products, but are not receiving the value we have paid for!

As I wrote the other day, when I had a complete "implosion" of the infotainment system and took it to a local Honda dealership (we're out of town). They did a factory reset, battery reset and downloaded the "latest" software, as well as made the repairs to the special recall issued over last weekend, regarding the metal burrs in the steering column.

Besides getting my car back with a ding in the driver's door that was NOT there when I dropped it off and denied it was their fault, the volume control on the steering was not working. As a strange coincidence, it popped on this morning!

However, with all the resets and updates, not only would Siri not work with my Apple Play, but when the phone was disconnected and I held it in my hand and accessed Siri, I received the same ****** message, "I'm sorry. I'm having difficulty connecting with the Internet. Please try again in a few moments. " And I'm on iOS 12.3.1.

I have just purchased a 2019 Pilot and I have not been successful using CarPlay as of yet. It consistently tells me ‘no phone connected’. I will think it is working, at least some of the features, and then it suddenly stops and tells me no phone connected. I have tried two different cables and it does it with both. It’s also telling me that it is updating my contacts. It is been telling me that for two days. I’ve only had the car for five days. I love everything else about it. But they should not sell you something that expensive that does not work. I’m fixing to delve into my war with Honda. But from the sounds of all these post it will do me no good.
