Why is VShield Scanner hogging memory?

Running OS 10.12.6 on late 2014 MacBook Air with 4MB of memory. Recently have been getting notices re high memory use which has never happened until the last couple of months. When I check the activity monitor VShieldScanner which belongs to root is running multiple instances .Today one instance was using 1.2 MB of memory. The rest were using about another 0.5 MB. Force quitting them just means that they will pop back up in a few seconds most of the time. No other apps seem to be hogging memory.

What is VShield Scanner doing and how can I stop the memory hogging? I think it belongs to McAfee All Access Security.

Should I consider just canning McAfee and going with MalWare Bytes alone?

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.12
