Sony HVR-V1U

Hello, I have both a 2013 and 2017 Apple Mac Book Pro and I want to buy a Sony HVR-V1U, HDV camcorder.

I've read the threads on this site regarding the Sony HVR-V1U, but I need to know if I can use Apples's iMovie that comes bundled with these Mac's.

I'm feeling so embarrassed to even ask this question, but I'm a total zero when it comes to understanding some of what (OK all) these threads are talking about ?

Isn't there just one short answer to my question ?

Much Peace, Charles

Hi,

On Apple's website listing cameras and recorders that are supported I don't see a Sony camcorder with the letters designation HVR-V1U that you described.

That doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work with iMovie. As long as you can download from your recorder into the Photos app, or onto your desktop using the Image Capture app on your Mac, you can drag the photos and videos into iMovie. If the format of the media is not supported, you can always convert it to iMovie supported Mp4/AAC with a free download app like Handbrake.

I forgot something...What if I were down grade my 2013 Mac Book Pro to an earlier OS that would be more compatible with the HVR-V1U or something similar ?

And I also forgot to mention, that I still have my 2006 Mac Book that might be of use here ?

Since I bought my newer 2017 Mac Book Pro I don't really use this 2013 model, I could easily dedicate this Mac Book for the HVR-V1U ?

Thanks, Charles

Thank You so much for getting back to me. I certainly will try using both the 2013 & 2017 Mac Book Pro's as they are, but if need be I won't hesitate to down-grade the 2013 Mac Book in order to be able to use the HVR-V1U with iMovie.

My 2017 Mac Book Pro comes with way less connectivity to external peripherals than my 2013 Mac Book therefor I had to invest in a hub. I went with the Cal Digit. I hated that Apple has gone this way and we're paying for more and getting less in a lot of ways.

At any rate, sorry to digress, in regards to using an external hard drive to capture my video footage...what eternal hard drive would I get and how or do I connect it to the V1U ? Connecting the external hard drive directly to the computer by some means of an adaptor will make the V1U even heavier than it already is, No / Yes ?

What about what somebody has mentioned here regarding all of this...the software or application called "Hand Brake" was mentioned...would this make all of this work out ?

I too wish you could get this camera over in the UK for we can pick these up for here in the states, and it sounds like you'd be able to swing it into action fairly quickly based on you knowledge about all of this.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm first and foremost a musician for over 50 years, also a graphic artist & designer since junior high school. I want to start melding all of these art forms together using and making some video shorts and such to mainly post on You Tube and my own web site.

I'm being honest when I tell you that I'm having a difficult time spending $500.00 dollars on a more modern day camera like the Sony HDR-CX-675 which by this time next year it won't be worth half of that amount and for the life of me I can't understand or figure out how it could match the video picture quality of a cameras that retailed for $2K to 5K...HV1 and HZ1 and such...

All of you have been a God send to me for helping me with this.

I have downloaded the owners manual for the HV1 and as I reported back to Rich, all I could find in regards to what video format it uses is that it's HDV or DCcam (DV) I can't seem to find where it talks about the audio format, whether it's digital or analog ?

All joking or kidding aside, what I'm hoping for it to run across a person who is doing exactly what I want to do using a camera such as the V1U, someone who has the same set up and can just tell me exactly what I need to buy and do in order to accomplish my mission.

Don't mis-understand me here, I'm not lazy or stupid. It's more a matter of understanding what the high tech jargon translates to in ordinary every day layman lingo. These owner manuals just like the countless owners manuals that I had to read and try to understand while setting up and learning how to put my 24 track recording studio together, both older analog gear and modern day digital gear, you talk about a headache !

Thank Rich, I'm hoping to come across somebody who uses basically the same set up that I or want to have with the purchase of one of these older high end tape based cameras. Surely there must be someone in this community that has somewhat newer Mac's and older style tape based prosumer tape based video camera(s).

How would I go about searching within the community for somebody who can say/tell exactly how to accomplish what it is I'd like to do ?

Yes I could jump in my car and drive over to Best Buy and spend 4 to 5 hundred dollars buying a camera that won't be worth beans in a year or 2, or I can hope to find an "angel" :) that already has this set up and is having no problems using it ?

I agree, just like with my recording studio gear and even musical equipment...there are always issues when trying to meld the older analog stuff to the newer digital stuff. But some how it all works out and somebody figures it all out and then graciously and generously passes the info out to the rest of us and on we go :)

Thanks, Charles
