“Files” app: files not showing

Often when I select to upload a file from an account connected in the Files app, nothing shows up in the given account - no files or folders. That or it becomes unusable due to a ”Content Unavailable” “unknown error”, or sometimes the accounts aren’t even accessible in the first place in that they fail to open when tapped. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with Drive, DropBox, iCloud or whathaveyou as when the issue occurs they all fail. Restarting the phone usually fixes it but I can’t restart the phone every time this happens, which recently has been often. Reinstalling the Files app didn’t stop the issue from occurring. What’s the deal?

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you’re unable to open files saved in the Files app on your iPhone, and restarting the device temporarily resolves the issue. I’d love to share some information with you that should help.


First, I recommend making sure your iPhone is up-to-date on the latest iOS version. Before updating, back up your personal data to iTunes or iCloud: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch


Additionally, be sure you’re taking each of these steps when using the Files app: Use the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. I also recommend connecting to another known-good network, then try opening your files again.


Lastly, check to see if you can open the same files on another device that’s signed in with the same Apple ID you use with iCloud. If the file can’t be opened on multiple devices, see if you can delete one of the files, then add it back to the Files app to test the issue.

It sounds like you’ve taken a lot of excellent steps so far. From here, I recommend toggling iCloud Drive off, then back on in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Drive. This step will help the documents sync to your device again. 


Also, please complete the following steps including deleting and reinstalling the Files app: If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
