Apple Watch Resting Calories Fluctuations

If the resting calories are your BMR, why does mine fluctuate daily? Even if my weight stays the same, on some days my BMR is much lower than on others. Surely this should be consistent, and only the active calories should change every day, based upon how much I move?

This is the formula to work out you're basal metabolic rate;

  • Men:  BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height in cm) - (5.677 x age in years)
  • Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 x weight in kg) + (3.098 x height in cm) - (4.330 x age in years)

Because we are all active at some point in the day then this figure will change,the ony time it will stay roughly the same is if you were in a coma or non active in some other way.

Here is an online calulator;

The BMR shouldn’t change every day. BMR is the number of calories burned when you are completely sedentary. It’s the number of calories your body burns when you are at rest. This is shown as the resting calories on the health app.

The active calories should be the calories earned when you move. So active calories should fluctuate every day, but resting calories should remain the same.

I've just checked my phone and my resting calories are also different every day, I'm assuming that because we don't weigh exactly the same each day etc, then this could be the reason for the slight fluctuation in numbers.

But you’re missing the point. BMR shouldn’t be affected by whether you move loads or don’t move at all. All of the movement that you do should appear in your active calories, not your resting calories.

Unless you are logging a weight change, your BMR should stay the same every day. If BMR is calculated by your height, weight and age, these factors don’t change across a week.
