MBPro 2016 Purple Vertical Lines, Fix or not?

Hello,

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro with touch-bar that few days ago when I opened it had lines coming down vertically all of a sudden and since it’s not under the Apple warranty anymore the Apple wants $475 for the LCD replacement.

I am in a position where I need to decide whether

1 I want to pay that $475 to Apple to repair

2 Attempt to fix it myself with replacement part for about $100

3 Sell it as is and get the 2018 model

4 Sell it for parts by stripping it down myself

Which of the options is more viable in my case?

The major problem I’m having is the fact that I will not feel good paying pretty much half of the value for a laptop to have its screen replaced.

This MacBook also had an LCD replaced due to delimitation as well as the keyboard

You took this in for an assessment and that was the diagnosis ?? specifically for the VST (Video Systems Test)

Have you tried an external monitor(?) do you still see the fault—this would indicate GPU,, and that would be a board replacement.

You can try Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

It could be a RAM issue, GPU, Screen, cable or cable connection.

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"—

You have the so called « flex gate ». The cable connecting the screen to the chassis has been designed too short en gets used over time by opening and closing the computer. If you are still under warranty you are fine, if not Apple will ask you around 600$/550€ to fix this. You can find more information on the web by typing « flexgate » in google search. There is an available petition you can sign as well.

PS: I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro 2016 Touch Bar, I paid over 2800€ for a device that worked for two years and for which I already had to replace the « butterfly » keyboard.

Ah yes— There is no service program at this time. However if one is issued in the future, typically Apple will offer a reimbursement for out of pocket expenses associated with that parts/labor.

Not much consolation now however, in trying to make a decision as to how to proceed.

You could buy a new machine, sit on the one you have, if a Service Program is offered—get it repaired at that time—and sell it.
