Need Help--Can't Update OS Corrupt Image .dmg File

I recently downloaded an adobe program that created problems on my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro and I ultimately had to delete my hard drive. I was able to boot up Mac OS X (10.8.5) from recovery mode, but I am not able to update the operating system. I've tried downloading OS Mojave and High Sierra from different browsers and an external flash drive, but every time I try to open the file it states that the file could not be opened due to a "corrupt image." I was able to open and install other dmg files (i.e. Google Chrome) without any issues. I've looked at a lot of different forum posts and have not been able to get this figured out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Try stair stepping up to the macOS you want to end up with.

Start with El Capitan first, then Mojave

If you want to make a bootable USB installer—quit the installer if it launches automatically. It will be sitting in your applications folder. ex Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app

Once your run the installer it will disappear form your Applications folder.

Thanks for the response. I tried downloading El Capitan, but get an error stating, “This version of OSX 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer.” I tried to download older versions and get the error message, “...can’t be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update”

I’m not sure why I’m running into this issue because the computer meets the requirements for the updates.
