iTunes Not Recognizing New iphone xs

"iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. You do not have permission." That's the message I get when I plug my new iPhone xs into my Macbook Pro. iTunes is not recognizing my phone. I OS X 10.9.5, which is apparently the latest update. My iPhone is up to date. Just bought it last week. How do I fix this?

iPhone XS, iOS 12

For iOS 12 you need iTunes 12.8.0.150 or better running on OS X 10.11.4 or better. See How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support if applicable.
