I've noticed since the update that Camera Roll is now blacking out videos and pictures on my iPhone. When I go into the roll on the iPhone the place where pictures for wallpapers or pictures of nature or friends have no been replaced with just a black box. Now tapping the box to bring the picture full screen doesn't fix the problem. It just shows up black as well. I've tried pulling those pictures from the iPhone to my PC and again same deal. I've lost a ton of photos. I also noticed this isn't just a problem my 3GS is experiencing since the update. The iPhone 4 that was located in my local at&t store was also doing the same thing. Blacking out pictures that people had taken with the phone. Anyone have an idea on what this is or how to fix it?
I just fixed the problem... It's all about the new multi-tasking feature. The files are synced correctly, however you need to close the running album app by double-clicking the home button, holding the app's icon a few seconds and then hitting the red X button. Then when you go into the photo album, the pictures show up correctly!
The workaround that _always works_ to cure the "black boxes" problem is to do a hard shutdown of your iPhone, then restart (reboot). The black boxes will be gone after the restart. I'm still testing the "kill the task" technique. More later.
Sorry. I tried that (holding the home button and the power button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo shows up then releasing the buttons and waiting some minutes for start screen) several times starting the procedure from camera roll app or from homescreen ==> nada. The problem with black thumbnails (approx. 30 out of 360—some at the end and some at the beginning of the roll pls. have a look at the screenshot that I've posted before) remains.
And I can't "kill" any "task" because my iPhone 3G has no multitasking.
I have a iPhone 3G and as soon as I applied the 4.0.1 update the camera roll album only showed a black box too. You can tap on the black box and bring up a photo and then scroll through, but it does not work like it did before the update. I have tried to resync it several times with no luck. It still just shows a black box.
Yeah the same thing happened to me, the camera roll only has 6 out of 89 pictures have thumbnails, how do I get them back? If I tap o a black square the picture is there and can scroll left or right and see them all but again no thumbnails
This is my first iPhone and already in deep do do on getting it to work correctly
any help appreciated
I had all of my photos in my camera roll show up as a single black box after syncing and adding a photo album to my 3GS. I was able to correct this by clearing the iPod Photo Cache:

well I deleted the folder .../pictures/ipod photo cache and then tried syncing my iphone 4 I still have only 6 out of 89 picture thumbnails in my camera roll.If I tap on a black area the picture shows up and I can scroll through the pictures but under albums the camera roll still has all the black thumbnails.
Yes indeed they should get involved. I called Apple support and then they had me do a hard reboot and had me do a restore from my iTunes backup, no good!
Next they had me do a system restore and then a restore from my backup again, still no good!
Then they wanted me to bring the phone to an Apple store to have a look and see if they can get my thumbnails back! I didn't loose any of my pictures doing this but again still no thumbnails. He said it might have been that the upgraded iOS went wrong but don't know how Apple verified the install so have no idea.
Funny the Apple rep told me he never heard of the problem so I told him he should look at the apple support pages. Sure seems a lot of people are having the same thing happen.
Hope this helps
Same problem here since the update to 4.0.1
iPhone 3G original no hacks.
All pictures that were taken between update 4.0 and 4.0.1 have black thumbnails. Before I updated to 4.0.1 it was all fine.
I tried all the hints I found here and elsewhere, nothing helped :'(
Any help is welcome...
Same trouble with black boxes with my 3G and upgrading to 4.0.1. The black boxes only appear between the dates of when I upgraded my phone to 4.0 and 4.0.1. Everything black but I can still scroll through them. APPLE HELP!!! We can not solve this on our own so you need to make a fix! So frustrating...Apple will probably tell us that we need to upgrade to a 4G but mine is too new.
I have a 4 , iOs 4.0.1. I never sync photos, I just copy them off with Image Capture. I have noticed the camera and Photos app hang. I get the black boxes.
