Is it possible to change a photo from landscape to portrait on my mac without any distortion. If so how do I do it please. I cannot crop as I would lose the 4 people in the photo

As I understand it you have a photo something like this:
This is landscape orientation.
If you want portrait orientation (with the depth greater than the width) you can either (a) crop, which will remove some of the subject; (b) squeeze (which will distort); or (c ) use image editing software to resize the document canvas and then fill the extra space with more background:
None of these is going to be particularly effective. But depending on your printer, and the software you're using to open the image, you should be able to fill the paper.

It does a pretty good job of fitting the image to the paper, although you do have to physically rotate the print by 90 degrees after it's been printed 😉
If I rotate the people are on their sides! I want to have a photo that is in landscape so that I can print it out as a Portrait. It has 4 people in it and when I try to put it into portrait mode, it does not show 2 of the people. I then want to print the portrait out on small photo paper. If you can help in any way I would be really grateful Thank you
Without actually seeing the photo it is hard to visualize the problem but instead of just rotating the photo as Leonie suggested, perhaps while in the Edit mode try re-cropping the photo and see if you can get the results you want/need. Then you should be able to print the photo the way you wish.
Thank you for your replies. I have tried with Photoshop Elements but been unable to get the picture to print on a 4 x 6 photo paper without either losing someone or having large blank spaces. It is a shame, but it seems that it is not easy to do. Most photos are in landscape when they have several people. My granddaughter wanted a photo of her and her 3 siblings but needed it portrait. Looks as if I will have to try to get them together to take one. Thank you for replying it is much appreciated
You can click the Rotate button to make a landscape photo a portrait photo. Rotating by multiples of 90° will work without the crop tool.
Does your photo need rotating by 90° degrees, or do you want to add add a background and show a landscape photo in a portrait placeholder?
