Error Exporting Unmodified Original - Internet Connection Required - An internet connection is required to download larger versions of these items for exporting

Hi guys,

I'm trying to export my iCloud Photos with The Photos app on my Mac but I'm continuously receiving this error.

Internet Connection Required - An internet connection is required to download larger versions of these items for exporting

My laptop is connected with an ethernet cable and is very strong so I have no clue why it's saying it's dropping (see speed and pinging below) so I don't see why I continuously receive this error. It makes no sense.

The worst part is that it happens continuously no matter how many photos/videos I try to export. It's horrifically annoying because I'm trying to clean up my iCloud storage as I'm close to exceeding my limit. I don't want to lose these videos as they are invaluable to me. What can I do? How else should I download my videos?

Also, the errors I receive from Apple are extremely weak and don't give any proactive advice on how to move forward:

Export Complete with Errors

129 (of 494) files have been exported to:

2019

The export operation failed to create files for 365 photos. The first 100 are listed below:

WTF?!

I'm trying over and over to export and nada. What can I do? I would really appreciate some guidance....

In your original post you listed the error message below:

The export operation failed to create files for 365 photos. The first 100 are listed below:

***?!

Can you see the filenames there?

Try to search for one of the filenames and export it individually - one at a time.

Is it possible to export the videos separately?

You can also download the original files from www.icloud.com.

Sign in with your AppleID, launch the Photos.app, find your video and select it, then hover the pointer over the download arrow. There is a tiny disclosure "v" in the lower right corner of the download arrow where you can select to download the original instead of the edited version.

Do you have any third-party security software installed? A firewall or antivirus software?

Your internet connection may be working very well, but third-party security software might be intercepting the connection to Apple's cloud servers. If you are using Kaperski or similar, disable it and try again to download the items from iCloud. Several users reported, that they had to connect to a Wi-Fi instead of using their Ethernet to be able to sync with iCloud Photos Library.

Unfortunately no one from Apple is allowed to respond to these forums. It is for USERS only. Now I have been told by several Senior Apple Techs over the years that they assume someone from Apple Tech Departments are monitoring the questions/answers/problems here BUT again they are not allowed to respond.

The only way is to call Apple Tech Support directly if you want an answer from them.

Another option is to sign into iCloud.com with your Apple ID and try downloading the photos/videos directly. However, if your photos are in RAW formats, you will only be able to download high quality JPEG versions, not the original RAW files (which are actually stored in iCloud but can only be uploaded and/or downloaded using the Photos App - assuming it is working).

I have the same problem. My setup is an old 11“ MacBook Air, iCloud is set up for optimized storage since I only have 128gb of ssd. The error occurs when I try to download/export a larger amount of photos as original unmodified to an external hard drive. Maybe you can try to set your photos app to keep the original unmodified photos on your macbook instead of only the cloud, then you should be able to export them even without internet. But for me that isn‘t an option because of my storage limitations. Has anyone another suggestion how to export the originals to an external drive?

Hey Leonie!

I don't have any 3rd party firewalls/antivirus enabled :\. I actually uninstalled Little Snitch in hope of fixing things but no luck. Apple's Firewall is also turned off.

With regards to Wi-Fi, I tried that first and that was worse. That's why I went to Ethernet :\.

Appreciate the response!

Mike

PS: Do you have any suggestions on escalating this up the ladder to Apple? I seriously think this is a cloud issue.
