imac (late 2012) Shuts off and won't restart unless unplugged

My 27" imac (late 2012) completely shuts down, and cannot be restarted unless I unplug the power cord.

I'm not sure if it's related, but whenever I do restart the machine, or get it to turn back on, it shows that an update is being installed.

No sure where to start on this one.

Thanks

iMac 27", macOS 10.14

The Etrecheck report will be very helpful, if your system will stay up and running long enough for you to download it and run it.

This Apple article describes how to use SAfe Mode for troubleshooting issues like this. Does the same shutdown issue occur in Safe Mode? If not, then you likely have a software issue that this article will help you resolve:

Please navigate to the Mac App Store and download the free version of EtreCheck OR please click www.EtreCheck.com where you will find the app. Once you downloaded the free app and created the report please post it as your reply to this message. We can then look for obvious issues that may be causing your problem.

That's an indication of a bad power supply. Had the same thing happen to a late 2014 iMac. It took 3 visits to the Genius Bar and several online sessions with Apple support to first confirm it wasn't a software issue and was a hardware problem.

The power supply was replaced and it hasn't had a problem since. I'd start with calling Apple support and going thru the erase and install of the system to check the software. Be sure to make a backup of your boot drive first. A clone to an external HD is a good idea as you can then reclone it back to the internal drive when it's time.

Hi, Apb625 !

The fastest way to separate hardware from software issues is to boot the iMac from a known-good copy of the macOS on an external hard drive. If the shutdown continues while booted from an external drive, you have a hardware issue.

It is possible, from what you describe, there is a hardware problem with the power button, power supply or logic board. The fastest way to find out exactly what vexes your iMac is to create an appointment to have diagnostics performed on your iMac at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I hope this helps you, and good luck !
