Copy Pasting Text with footnotes from Word for Mac into Pages

I am trying to copy/paste text with footnotes from Word for Mac into Pages, and while the formatting is preserved, the footnotes are not picked up -- even the in-text numbers are lost. Any advice how to fix this?

The only means to get Word footnotes correctly into Pages is to open a Word document in Pages, and let the translation process do its handiwork. Footnotes are preserved when you do this.
