2017 imac responding very slow High Sierra

In the past 3 weeks my iMac is running very slow. I am running high sierra 10.13.6. I have (2) 4gb memory slots, Intel Core i5, 2.3 GHz , Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536MB and 1TB of HD storage which 699.09 gb remains open. I have plenty of space. I store all my files on a external HD.

Can macs have viruses? Is there anything I can use to scan my computer to see why it's running slow??? Please help.

The usual suspects do not stand out. Swap Used > 0 means your hd is being used for the lack of RAM.I think the number is small enough not to be the cause of your slowdowns, but you never know.

1) Try a safe boot.

    Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift

key.  Poweron.  The boot up will take longer than normal

because the filesystem on the startup drive is being checked and

repaired as needed.   All about safe mode including what

features and apps safe boot leaves out.

Safe boot uses a software driver instead

of using your machines video hardware.

just for giggles. a bad hd would slow down your machine alot.

2) You should run disk utility

     Macintosh-HD -> Applications ->

Utilities -> Disk Utili

     a) verify the disk

     b) update your permissions.

I'd run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if you can find any thing odd.

To add to the others:

  1. If you enable Full Disk Access for EtreCheck it can provide additional info that includes any diagnostic reports. These will help tremendously as they would include things like kernel panics.
  2. If you are not using the following apps, I suggest removing them completely: TeamViewer & LogMeIn. If you do, since both perform basically the same function, at least get rid of one or the other.
  3. Your system drive's read/write performance is dismal, especially for a 2017 notebook, even one with a mechanical HDD.

You need more RAM, you're running a lot of stuff for only 8 GB of RAM...

Still I think there may be something running amuck since you only have 14 MB of Free RAM, which I don't see all the rest accounted for.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
