Connected Ipad to my Mac. Got message saying software needed to be downloaded. Proceeded with the download but got "fail" saying software not available on server.
Tried the solution offered re MobileDeviceUpdater on 31 Dec 2018 but got the same result. What now?

Thanks so much, miskeecare. I reset the nvram as suggested and the connection Ipad to my iMac worked perfectly.

try a diferent lightning cable
it is good known issue due the saved setting in nvram of the macs in mojave.You are welcome and I am happy that Your issue is resolved. :)
