I need to use time machine to back up. I can't find a external hard drive with both SSD and thunderbolt connection, other than one for over five hundred dollars. Any options that I'm missing? Also, my machine is a 2012 lat model 27" iMac.

You don't need a hard drive with both SSD and a thunderbolt connection. It just needs to be able to connect to you iMac with a USB, Thunderbolt, or FireWire port.

Get a USB 3.0 unit as that will fast enough. I use these: OWC Mercury Elite Pro
It's more than fast enough and it's extremely reliable.
What is the model ID for your Mac? It can be found in the first section of the System Information:

Okay, well, i did just buy one. They sell them at the Apple store to use with the Time Machine !
so i have the Porsche Design Mobile Drive from LaCie 4 TB, and it comes with USB-C/USB-C and USB-C/USB-A. I thought my mac had USB C but I can't find a port for it. Seems like the USB-C/USB-A is going to be a slow process... how can I use my thunderbolt port with this?
Use a good brand like Seagate or Toshiba,to make a Time Machine copy on your Mac! (I do it myself)
OWC Mercury Elite Pro is just for the Professionals?
I will not use the Lacie Drive on this issue?
But it just my own opinion?
