Exercise ring on Apple Watch with outdoor walk

The exercise ring on the Apple Watch 3 is so frustrating! An outdoor walk for 40 minutes at a fast pace gets me 7-10 minutes. I’m walking at a pace of around 15 minuets per mile so it knows my heart rate is up. I can tap my left hand on my leg and get minutes on the exercise ring. This is really messed up!

Ah, yeah. Choosing the walk workout is kind of tricky as you have to walk very fast and keep that speed or it doesn't count towards exercise.

I choose Other or mixed cardio when I go outside for a walk so it actually counts.

Every full minute of movement that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise and Move goals

You can try calibrating the Watch to see if it improves: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204516

Workout types: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT207934#walk

Thank you for the advice. I have actually tried all of those ideas. Everything will register for exercise ring except outdoor walk. It shows upon the actual outdoor walk workout, just not on my exercise ring. It shows exercise minutes but it won't register a good hard walk unless my left arm is swinging like a mad woman. It can't be the heart rate measurement because it registers minutes for my exercise ring for patting my left hand on my leg but not for walk.

No worries at all, yeah I can understand.

I'm a fairly short person, so for it to register an outdoor walk to count towards the exercise goal, I need to be close to running.

I sort of gave up trying to make it work and accepted it doesn't work for my walking speed. I kind of like thinking going for an outdoor walk is like Mixed Cardio.

You can choose other as a workout and then there are plenty of different types of activities to choose from.

I spent a month trying to make the Outdoor Walk work for me. It's frustrating because you are exercising but the watch software isn't programmed to pick it up, I guess so it doesn't count walking in general as exercise. Hopefully, it is something that changes with future updates or sensors. But for now and our sanity - Mixed cardio?

I have re-calibrated my watch literally 10 times trying to get my walks to register on the exercise ring. My walk registers in the walking work-out. I've given up on it giving me credit for my walk from the walking workout. My husband had the big fitbit versa and his registers every step he takes. Honestly for fitness training, I think the fitbit is the best. Apple needs to step up their fitness game. I walk 3-15 minute miles and that is walking with a shepherd-husky mix that slows me down a lit so he can smell or pee on every tree or bush we come to, so it's not like I'm walking like a slug. Oh well, I like my apple watch for other things.
