How to "join" a chapter title with returns in the table of content in Pages?

I am trying to put the chapter number ABOVE the chapter TITLE, and this means a double paragraph return. It looks great on the page, but I get TWO entries on the Table of Contents.

Is there a way to "join" the numeral and the chapter title in the table of contents?

Here is an example (below) of the first chapter, how it looks in the document:

_______________________________

Here is how it looks (below) in the table of contents. It shows up as TWO entries. Is there a way to edit JUST the table of contents, and NOT the actual layout on the appropriate page within the document? I want the chapter title to read as "1 THE FIRST MONTH" all in one line.

Thanks,

Mike

Use soft returns (shift return).

You cannot join ToC entries.

The only way to produce "1 THE FIRST MONTH" in the ToC entry is to do so in your body text. This could be a white-color numeral 1, but that obviously offsets "THE FIRST MONTH" text entry. The separate, antecedent "1" could be bold body text in the same font size, and it doesn't get picked up by the ToC generation.
