Software update stalls

I've been troubleshooting for a few days. When starting in Safe Mode, it says my 2018 MacBook Air is up to date (Mojave 10.14.4). When I go back to regular mode, it still says an update needs to be installed, but it hangs. I did remove a startup item for an app I no longer have installed as part of the troubleshooting, but that didn't help.


The Mac seems to be operating normally except for the stalled updater. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve the problem
