Mail App Opens Randomly Mojave 10.14.5

The mail app will open all by its self. After checking mail and then minimizing the app, it will suddenly just pop open again. There is no new mail in the inbox when this happens.

For anyone who did not see my solution/workaround from a while back in this thread, i'll link to it here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250385204?answerId=251388086022#251388086022. It includes quite detailed instructions, but the basic idea is that two step authentication for gmail does not work properly in the Mail app. The workaround is to not use the built-in google preset when adding the account. Instead manually set it up (which is quite easy as well) with an "App password" set up in the google account. For me, this has worked for over two months without mail ever opening since.

I fixed the problem. I downloaded and installed Airmail - wow, I didn't realize there was an app better than Apple Mail - so I guess I am thankful Apple Mail sucks because now I have a better program to admin my email accounts. I probably won't be back unless Apple fixes this. I have 28 business gmail accounts I administer - there is just no way I am logging into Gmail 28 times and manually shutting off calendar notifications. Funny thing is calendar is actually disabled on these accounts so there is definitely a MacOS bug at work here.

This thread was a big help though - good reading.

So after battling this for a while, I decide rather than go into 20 gmail accounts and shut of notifications, I would research other mail app options - WOW ! I had no idea how lame Apple Mail was until I purchased and installed AirMail. I will never go back to Apple Mail. I literally just got an hour of my day back ! What a difference !

If any of you are looking for a fix to this NAGGING problem - and you administer multiple email accounts I highly suggest you look at Airmail. Seriously, I wish I knew about this a long time ago - SO much nicer, faster and more customizable .

I guess I can thank Apple for a buggy POS, I would never had needed to look at other apps. Best $26 I've ever spent !

@ Auqatree - actually that is not true. Apple iCloud may require permission via a secondary password - but Gmail does not. All the app is doing is passing through IMAP info from the server they have zero access to anything and since everything is still stored on IMAP its actually more secure than if you left it on your computer. When you log in you are actually logging in via the Google login console, not a separate window like you do when you use Mac Mail. We have never used iCloud mail - just G-Suite business email - it is far more secure than any free service and their spam filters are far more effective. G-Suite also offers encryption and HIPPA security which iCloud does not. I've been a security consultant for a long time - I feel this solution is pretty bomb proof. I am amazed at how nice this app is , actually.

All that said - its never a good idea to store highly sensitive info on any system - unless its highly encrypted.

I have to tell you - I am almost happy this failure with Mail surfaced - for if it were not I never would have sought out another app or never tried AirMail - that app is so much better on every level than Apple Mail I wish I knew about it years ago. If you are struggling with this problem - and the other nagging issues within Apple Mail - I highly suggest checking out Airmail. Especially if you using Google G-suite or have multiple google accounts it makes managing them SO much easier. I will never go back to Apple Mail - its that effective and elegant - it also is completely seamless in the way it integrates into MacOs.

You tell it what folders to create and where. I now am able to have all my folders in one place online and no longer have any risk of losing them on a local drive. Apple mail can do that too of course via "on my Mac" but AM's method is pretty elegant. I am not sure if it was 100% apparent you can do that, but you can even go into gmail and create the folders and have them show up on AM. Since I am managing 20 or more client admin accounts this works amazingly well for me - I could never do this with Apple Mail. As I originally said though - not for everyone - Apple Mail is pretty solid on its own if it were not for this irritating screen popping nightmare I'd never have changed. Hopefully they fix it in Catalina.

FWIW, I have been trying to track down this issue for a week now on 5 different Macs running 10.14.5, 10.14.6 Beta and 10.15 Beta. I have 3 Gmail accounts in Mail. The only way I can reproduce the problem is to use the red close button as opposed to the yellow minimize button. Minimized Mail has not opened on its own for me in that week.

G Suite may have different results but I don't use it.

I have several gmail accounts; each for different reasons/businesses. I changed all of their settings within the last week and have not had the Mail-opening-itself-issue ever since. I wonder if the difference is that you are using G-Suite. I only have regular gmail accounts.

Because the layout is now different, I had to use slightly different steps from the original Reddit post; I am unsure if you can follow these bc you use G-Suite but here are the steps I used (for each google account):

  1. Go to calendar.google.com
  2. "My calendars" are listed in the left column
  3. Click the 3 dots next to any of the "My calendars" then select "Settings and Sharing"

4. Scroll down or just click "General Notifications"

5. Change all 5 options to "none"

Hope this helps

I had this issue for over a year with 2 macbooks. Might have found a solution though. I believe that the issue, at least for me, comes from using 2-factor authentication on my google account.

So, the issue that mail opens by itself was for me only happening when the application was running while not having the main mail window open anywhere. If the application was not open (had been quit) or if the main window was open in the background somewhere, it did not open by itself. It only opened when I had my gmail account active, so deactivating it also stopped it from not opening by itself, but that is not really a solution. But I think I have found something that works.

I, just a few days ago, deactivated my gmail account in the mail application and activated it again, but not using the easy google "preset". Instead, under "Preferences..." in mail and then in the "Accounts" tab, I clicked the plus symbol in the lower left corner to add a new account and selected "Other Mail Account...". Then entered my google account name and gmail address, went to my google account in a web browser ("account.google.com") and under "Security" generated a new "App password" and used that to login to my gmail account in the mail application.

The mail window has not opened by itself yet, so it has so far been a success for me. Hope this helps someone else with the same or similar issue :)

I do not use google calendar - its actually disabled in my G-Suite Console, we use Apple Calendar only. I do not see how this could effect mail if its disabled.
