imessage notifications not working

imessage notifications not working

My husband's phone is having issues with imessage notifications. It will not notify him of new imessages. It appears as if all imessages are marked as read and he doesn't know they are new until he goes into the message app and opens a conversation. Messages are appearing, just not notifying. This problem is solved if I send him the message as a text however. Then it works as it should. We have both looked online and tried troubleshooting ourselves. We have turned Bluetooth off, reset network settings, checked do not disturb, checked the notification and sound settings, done all software updates, reset the phone and nothing works. Phone is a 7 plus. Please help!

Okay, when you mention that you have tried troubleshooting, before we go through an entire list to recommend, is this the list?

Power cycle phone
Create current backup, restore from backup
Restore to factory, set up as new, not using backup

I see you say that you checked notification settings and sounds, also Do Not Disturb. Do notifications not sound for all messages, or just selected messages?

Yes that is the list. When we restore to factory settings and setup as new phone it solved the problem. As soon as we restored the backup the problem returned. imessage notifications seem to come in for select contacts but not all contacts. He doesn’t receive notifications for any of my iMessages unless it is a group message and then he does get a notification from my messages.

If this worked when you set up as new, and the problem returned when you restored the backup, then the problem is in the backup. Since notifications are only working for some contacts and not all, it would seem it is possible you have some of the messages set for Hide Alerts. Check that by going to the threads he is not receiving alerts for and click on the (i) after tapping the name it is coming from and see if Hide Alerts is checked.

Yes it does appear to be a problem within the backup. Trying to figure out what the problem is so we can avoid having to wipe the phone to solve. None of the contacts have hide alerts selected. Have tried turning it on and then back off. Same result. It’s as if hide alert is on all the time despite it actually being off.

At this point, I see no other alternative since you have checked all locations that could lead to a lack of notifications, and it would seem it is narrowed down to the backup being the issue. How you proceed is up to you, but I think you know where this is headed. Good luck.

Do the two of you share an Apple ID? Does your husband have an Apple Watch?

no we each have separate Apple ID's and no he does not have a watch or any other apple device that he receives messages on
