I believe I've got all the preferences set up correctly. but I continue to get the "Connection Failed" message. I attempt to share screen and get "There was a problem connecting go the server "Bacon's blah blah blah." Does the same thing in both directions.

Do you have SMB sharing enabled & AFP sharing disabled?
Also check Finder>Go menu>Connect to Server>Favorite Servers, delete any AFP:// ones.
