iMessage Freezes / is unusable on MacOS High Sierra

All of a sudden about 2 days ago my iMessage stopped working on my MacBook Pro. THe system is a late 2011 MBP running High Sierra 10.13.6. The computer suffered the graphics card failure about 9 months ago, I had it repaired and its been running great. A few days agom there were a few times when the system "freaked out" (mouse jumping randomly, graphics not quite right). Then after a reboot iMessage no longer works, however every other app on the system seems to be working fine.

I can launch iMessage and it looks normal, I can also scroll through the messages in the left column. However if I try to open a conversation, preferences, etc the app just freezes and will stay that way indefinitely. also, if I click on the iMessage icon with another window open (browser, mail, etc) it will not bring iMessage to the front. Nothing changed, settings are the same (as far as I can tell), but it just stopped working.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?
