I installed Mojave after being prompted by my computer to do so and now all of the files on my desktop are missing and some of my software no longer works...why is this happening and does anyone have a solution?

Did you activate iCloud? If so your files are likely moved to the iCloud drive. With respect to apps no longer working, did you confirm with the app developer that their apps work with Mojave? Check with the app developers' regarding whether or not they have app updates for Mojave.
