Late 2017 iMac 27" 5k RAM upgrade question?

I want to upgrade the RAM from the current 8 GB. My question is, if I install 2x8 GB and bring it to 24 GB total of RAM right now, but some time in the future my editing needs grow, and I wish I had a more, could I at that time, replace the 2x4 GB MAC OEM cards then? Or must/should I always keep those OEM and scrap the 2x8 new ones, & upgrade them? I hope my question makes sense. Im a new MAC user.

You can replace the 2x4GB modules at a later date.
