Damaged MagSafe port

So, I accidentally dented the MagSafe charging port on my MacBook Air. When I contacted a computer repair store they said I might have to replace the motherboard which would be an $800 fix. I didn’t think the dent was that severe and wondered if I had any other options. Please feel free to recommend options and drop price estimates! Thanks!

Here’s a photo of the damage.

It looks like you have a MacBook Air Mid-2012 mode, but that is just an educated guessl. You'll want to confirm exactly which model you have for sure though by running your serial number through here:

Most MacBook Air's do have a replaceable DC-in board (aka Magsafe board) that is easy to replace, but it's possible what is happening is that your bottom lid is actually shorting out your DC-in board.

I would take off the bottom cover and pound down that corner of the bottom lid that appears to be digging into the DC-in board and seeing if just flattening it cures the problem (if it's a short-circuit), otherwise that tiny (inexpensive) board needs to be replaced

For example, to pick up a replacement for a 2012 model you could go here for $21:

The magsafe port on a MacBook Air is a separate part called an I/O Board and the part is not expensive. Reforming the corner of the Bottom Case will be difficult due to the multiple curves, but not impossible.

Edit: See this from iFixIt:

https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Air-13-Inch-Mid-2013-2017-I-O-Board/IF188-092?o=1

Edit#2: I didn't see the price from iFixIt which is EXPENSIVE! It is much cheaper direct from Apple although you will have labor costs.

The computer won’t charge but that’s the only issue. It still functions perfectly beyond that

Chances are the I/O Cable came loose from the impact which might affect the charging. Also I would be concerned the Bottom Case could short out the I/O Board with the bend in the corner. I would be very careful using it until the corner of the Bottom Case is straightened out a bit so it won't make contact with the I/O Board.

The estimate of the repair shop makes no sense. Even iFixIt's price for the part is 3x Apple's part price. It is possible fixing the corner of the Bottom Case & reseating the I/O Cable could fix it, although I would be a little concerned that the Magsafe port itself could be bent.

The magsafe connector isn't a separate piece. It's attached to the motherboard.

As a result...if it is not working, fixing it involves replacing the whole motherboard.

I'm assuming your power cord can't attach and/or charge your MacBook anymore?

If so...your best option may be to replace it.

How old is your Air?
