How do you subscribe to RSS in iOS 12?

Hi, all,

Most of my online subscriptions are via email, but several times I’ve seen articles (blogs?) where I wanted to subscribe, only didn’t know how. Today, I’ve found another, and decided it’s time to try to learn more about just what RSS is and how to use it with iOS.

Tonight, when I clicked subscribe within an article, Apple News opens up, saying “Content Unavailable” “This content is not available in Apple News.” (See attached) It doesn’t work.

So, I’m afraid I’m pretty new and unsophisticated to understanding all the things having to do with reading pages online, such as Safari’s Read Later, Instagram or Pocket, and, now, RSS feeds or even using bookmarks.

Time to get myself organized if it’s not too difficult and if there’s help out there!

Thanks!

Linda

Hi ilovedaisies and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you have some questions about reading RSS feeds and from the screenshot provided, it appears you're likely on an iPad. I love the News app and use it pretty much all day, but it's not meant to be an RSS reader. If you go to the App Store on your device and search for RSS reader, you'll find a number of highly-rated options, many of them free. Take a look at the features and reviews and pick the one that's best for you.

Cheers.

Hi ilovedaisies,

If you're trying to get to RSS feeds that you previously tried to open in the News app, they've been added as Favorites there and that's likely what's making News the default for opening them. Try this:

1) Quit any of the RSS readers you've downloaded

2) Open the News app and navigate to Favorites. You should see the RSS feeds you tried to use with News previously. Delete them.

3) Check an other devices signed in to the same Apple ID to ensure that the RSS feeds are not showing as Favorites there

4) Reboot the iPad and launch only the RSS reader you want to use and then try to open the feed from within that app

If these steps still do not resolve things, then start again from the top and this time delete the News app from all devices between steps 3 and 4.

If none of this is effective, I'd encourage you to reach out to Apple Support here to report the issue.

Hi, sterling r,

Thank you very much. I struggled between RSS readers Unread and Reeder4, and bit the bullet and got the one I had to pay for, because it said I could read things later with Instagram. Too, if I read the reviews correctly, it cost only a one time fee, vs. having to pay, later, for an actual subscription. Both seems to be highly rated. However, once I did that, I tried to subscribe to a RSS feed (below), only to still have Apple News open — as above — with the same message: that the content was unavailable.

So, not knowing how to bypass Apple News from opening, automatically, when I clicked the RSS (orange) symbol on a browser page — the sound symbol to the right of the twitter blue bird, if I understand it correctly — I deleted it. I thought, maybe it would force (or allow) Reeder4 to open, instead. Only, it didn’t work, and now I get a message that Apple News is required for the RSS feed.

I must be doing something wrong. Reading on one of the reviews that I needed something else, I dowloaded their suggested app, Feedly, too, only to see, when I installed it, that Reeder4 had another (feed?), already. All-in-all, I wasn’t sure I needed either one. However, now I’m out $5, and still don’t know how to use RSS on iOS.

Can you help, please? Are there instructions on using Apple News for RSS? Perhaps, I’m not subscribing to RSS in iOS in the proper manner. I didn’t click on a link, as the response window says, but only on the orange RSS symbol which I thought I was supposed to do.

Many thanks!

Linda
