Apple TV Youtube app buffering forever

Hi All,

I'm sure this is nothing new, but haven't seen any way to fix this more than waiting for Google to update the app. Anyways here's my story:

Youtube had been working just fine since I bought the ATV 4K back in February. Since Friday, June 1st, I can't play a single video. As others have reported, Netflix, HBO GO, etc. work just fine. The spinning wheel showing is loading remains there until I do something or screensaver starts and eventually ATV goes to sleep mode.

I've tried: deleting and install YT. Reset ATV to factory settings. Restarted router. Cleared search and playback history. Use the app without signing in. It's been only a week, but YT is the app I use the most. I find it strange that there is no workaround or fix more than just waiting for Google to update the app.

I'm hoping anyone can suggest something I might have not tried.

As the issue is only occurring on the Youtube app, and persists after reinstall, then it is something the developer would need to fix, just as would be the case with an issue on an IOS app or any other platform.

If you haven't already, give feedback to them directly and encourage others to do so as well.

I’ve sent them feedback already but judging from other reports from the past year they haven’t fixed this for quite a while.

My current workaround is, watch Youtube on the iPad/iPhone via Safari and airplay to ATV. I don’t feel particularly happy with this as there are far cheaper devices to use as an airplay box. I also understand that it is Google’s responsibility, not Apple’s.

Youtube app was updated on July 26th. Although it did not solve it right away, currently, I'm able to watch videos with no issues. Let's see if this lasts.

It might have something to do with the router. I have a router and in another room a powerline, when I connect to it, I get to watch at least a video, then if I power cycle the router (thus resetting the powerline) I'm able to stream one video again.

This is by no means a solution, but it is an another clue that points to my router and the app itself as, again, no other app is giving me this trouble.

So that would show that google has trouble with their app on two platforms. If enough users complain and persist with them then that is what it will take for them to fix it.

My comment above was in reference to your mention of a cheaper device for airplay.

Yes, I know airplay is Apple's. Now, airplay to YT is working via Safari, not from the YT app on iPad/iPhone.

Anyways, I guess that's how is going to be for now.

Users may need to persist so that they can take it seriously.

As far as airplay, that is an Apple protocol. Using it to stream video required Apple TV devices until recently, when it started to launch on recent smart tv's.
