Macbook Pro heats up incredibily hot, and fans wont turn on.

This is an issue that happens once a week or so. I wouldnt be doing anything intensive, and the macbook would heat up tremendously, making the case too hot to touch, and the fans wont spin up. When this happens, the macbook gets extraordinarily slow, making it unusable. When i check what tempreature it is, the temprature gauge is stuck at 50 or so degrees, not fluctuating at all. I feel this may be some sort of sensor malfunction. Most of the times, im able to fix the problem by restarting, but as this happens so frequently, im not sure what i should do next. Would i need to take it in to an apple store to get it fixed? or is this some sort of software issue?

I have a 2017 macbook pro 13, with the 3.1ghz i5.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

Resetting SMC could solve the issue.

If it doesn't work, run Apple Diagnostics if it reports something.
