Ok, so I think the issue is the difference between an ISO (European) physical keyboard type and an ANSI (US) keyboard type as that is different than just the input source.

If you go to System Preferences > Keyboard icon again, on the first tab is the "Keyboard" tab. On the bottom left corner is the "Change Keyboard Type" button. Which brings up a wizard. If you accurately follow the wizard it will set your keyboard type appropriately (as ANSI vs ISO).

Note: If you want the opposite keyboard type of what you actually have then you have to lie to the wizard, but hopefully that won't be neccessary.

Hi, I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I think this might help:

If you go to the Apple  logo on the top left corner and select System Preferences you can open the Keyboard icon. Select the Input Sources tab and click the "+" on the bottom left corner to add additional keyboard layouts (such as English U.S). When you click on an input source it shows you a preview. You can even press the OPTION key, SHIFT key, or SHIFT+OPTION keys together to see in the preview how it will change that according to the particular layout you highlighted. Once you know what you want then click Add.

I would also suggest checking the "Show Input menu in menu bar" check box in the bottom of the Input Sources window. This will give you a little flag by your clock where you can switch input methods.

You can even click that flag to bring up an onscreen keyboard (Show Keyboard Viewer) you might find helpful.

I've never heard of anyone missing one of the keyboards provided by Apple. When you use the + button and go through the list to choose Spanish, you should see this:

Does yours really only have one item in it -- Spanish but not Spanish ISO?

This is in System Preferences/Keyboard/Input Sources

Dear rcosta887, thank you for replying to my question. But what you suggest is exactly what l did. I can’t seem to explain the problem! I click on system preferences, then keyboard then input sources. But l touch + and scroll down the language options. I can find Spanish, but not Spanish ISO. apparently it must be the ONLY option on my list. But l can’t find it. There must be a simple way. Can you develop further? Thanks Lisa

My pleasure!

If your issue still isn't revolved tell me if you have an ISO type (i.e. a half-width left SHIFT key with another key between left-shift and the first letter (usually a Z) along with a double-row-height (tall/skinny) "Enter" key....

...or if you have an ANSI type with a full-width left SHIFT key adjacent to Z along with a single-row-height full-width "Enter" key.

And just so I'm clear, tell me what country you are in and what country you bought your MacBook in.
