apple tv verification code

I can no longer access my purchased movies on Apple TV. I keep getting the error message:

"An Apple ID verification code is required to sign in. Type your password followed by the verification code shown on your other devices."

It is not clear how to do this or what my "other devices" even means. Why am I getting this error and how exactly do I fix it? Do I type my password followed immediately by some code (i.e., one continuous string) and how exactly do I get the code?

If you have two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, then at certain sign-in moments, you would get a verification code (6 digits) send to a “trusted device” (as you would have assigned it), to be entered where you sign in.

You need two-factor authentication to use certain features that require improved security.

Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication - Apple Support

Regardless of receiving a code, you can request a new code at any time (replacing the previous one), on your trusted device, e.g. iPhone, iPad or Mac. If you don’t have a trusted device handy, you can have a verification code sent to your trusted phone number as a text message or phone call.

There is a time limit so you are likely exceeding that when attempting to enter everything all at once. It is best to enter the password, then request the code and then add it to the end of the password.

2 factor authentication is optimized for newer software/hardware and this requires things being done differently when using an older device like a 2nd or 3rd Gen Apple TV.

The 3rd Gen is discontinued, but still receiving some support, while the 2nd Gen is classified as obsolete.

Thanks for your quick response. My trusted device (my new Mac mini computer) recognized that someone was trying to sign in to my Apple TV, I hit the ALLOW button, and a verification code was sent. I typed my password plus verification code in the password field in one string as instructed (password followed by 6 digit code). But, I keep receiving the error message "Your Apple ID or password was entered incorrectly." I independently verified that my password was current/correct by signing into the iTunes Store from my computer.

My AppleTV box is a 2nd or 3rd generation model. Could that be the problem, i.e., my hardware is too old? Also, I installed a new Mac mini just a few months ago, which is recognized in my user account. Did I miss something in the setup that is impacting my Apple TV?
