Problems with the import of JPEG/HEIC photos from iPhone X into iPhoto or Photos

Just got the first time to travel with an iPhone X. I'd like to import the pictures now - but it doesn't work with iPhoto, nor with Photos, nor with Preview. Everyone reports an error:

iPhoto: The following file could not be imported. The file is an unrecgonized format (IMG_1592.JPG)

Photos and preview: The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9912.) (-9912).

That I cannot import HEIC would still be understandable. But the JPGs?

With iMazing (Trial Version) it works... But it can't be that I have to buy a software to download pictures from my iPhone, can it?

I am on HighSierra 10.13.6. And iOS 12.3.1.

Many thanks for a tip!

With High Sierra on your Mac you should be able to import HEIC and JPG files.

Have you tried to download the photos with Image Capture to a folder on your Mac, so you can check them in Preview and not to import them directly into a photo application?

Is it only one file that is giving this error? Or all images that you are trying to import? Have the photos been taken with the Camera.app on the iPhone or with a third-party camera? If it is only one photo, import the others and transfer the one you cannot import with iMazing, so you can check it.

If all photos are problematic, check the cable you are using to connect the iPhone to your Mac. The -9912 error is very typical for a bad connection. Use the original cable, that came with the iPhone, make sure the iPhone is fully charged, before connecting it, and connect it directly, not with a HUB.
