Netflix app becomes slow on Apple TV

I have a 4th generation Apple TV HD. I have no issues except with the Netflix app. I have a rather lengthy "My List" and ever since they deployed their ribbon interface I've had issues. After I've watched a video and return to the list, the longer I scroll, the scrolling begins to slow down. Over time, it slows so much that the app becomes unresponsive.

The only way to get it going again is to restart the Apple TV. I have no issues with other apps, only Netflix.

I contacted Netflix and after going through the usual motions, restart this and restart that, and explaining I'd done all this and that and telling them this app will work fine for now but act up later, their response was to contact Apple. Contact Apple? Netflix is the only app acting up. They asked if the problem is seen on other apps. I said my Mac is the only other place I watch Netflix. They responded, "Ah, the issue is the Apple TV since it works fine on your Mac."

"Seriously?" I said. The technology is different for each device. One is on a browser, the other is a device specific app. But they stuck with their mantra. Obviously, they're clueless and unwilling to expedite such issues to their app development team. Very pitiful customer service.

So I'm asking everyone here, is anyone else experiencing a Netflix app that runs ever more slowly the longer they use it? It acts like the app is sucking up memory until there's no more available, causing the scrolling to eventually stop scrolling, followed by the app becoming unresponsive all together.

I originated this thread. I've had a few discussions with Netflix about this and as others have reported, Netflix insists we contact Apple, which is ludicrous. The problem isn't with anything Apple. My most recent chat session is below.

Jake Netflix

have you tried to unplug your Apple TV and the TV it's connected to from power for at least 2 minutes?

You

yes, same result. TV OS is NOT the problem. go to Apple's community. there are masses of folks experiencing this.

You

if it were, other apps would have issues

Jake Netflix

Alright. Let me reach to our support to help me investigate the issue.

You

you're the first to offer such.

Jake Netflix

Give me a minute.

Jake Netflix

I have reached our support and he'll help me investigate the issue. :)

You

I bet he'll tell you to tell me to call Apple. That's been the mantra.

Jake Netflix

Hold on. Still investigating.

Jake Netflix

Hey there! Thank you for reporting this. Also, can you give us your best email to contact you on? We might reach you out again in case we need further investigation.

This was a few weeks ago. Not surprisingly, I never was contacted afterwards. Netflix is headed down the path to failure by not responding to customer problems, something they cannot afford to do in an increasingly competitive environment. Will Netflix go the way of Blackberry and others? Companies too arrogant by their size to not see the approaching cliff.

If someone with the older Apple TV box has fixed the problem, then that would be good to know. To me, having to go in regularly and clear out background apps is helpful, but not a proper solution if you have to do that more than once. (I have not tried it either) I have several other Apple 4k with netflix with my account logged in and they are all fine. Its all narrowed down to one tv in our house (the main media room). It works just fine in our bedroom which is the same exact setup.

Exactly! I mentioned earlier, I actually contacted Netflix support btw. The answer was to restart everything from power cord (even tv which is completely unrelated), obviously I trïed factory reset and installing app again also.

So the chat support said that "this is not appletv support", yea it is not but it requires interaction between Apple and Netflix to fix the issue. I would say after all Netflix is propably one of the most used App in AppleTV after Youtube.

So, guys who have this issue, please contact Netflix support too and require them to make ticket about issue! Remember to say that the problem comes BACK always that is the actual problem.

Absolutely it should be fixed. It's a major defect.

I don't know how much of the thread you have read. I did solve the problem by turning off video preview on the account (described above by someone) but it took several weeks before that setting migrated to the Apple TV box.

As far as it taking hours to come back after a reset, that is evidence of a memory management issue, possibly persistent caching or poor garbage collection of the video previews.

This app should not meet Apple approval standards with a bug like this.

Netflix is a direct competitor to AppleTv’s streaming service. This slowness began right after Apple began with their streaming service. It’s not a coincidence. Remember this is the same company it’s been proven to have purposely slowed down older model iPhones to get you to upgrade. This is more of the same. Netflix doesn’t have this problem running on any other platform.

OMG, enough with the conspiracy theorists. This problem started before Apple TV+. Besides, Apple has no interest in hurting Netflix. If they thought Netflix was a threat, they'd kill the Netflix app.

Also, Apple slowed performance on older iPhones in an effort to improve battery life, not encourage buying new phones. Their only screwup was not initially making it an option, which they did later. Apple isn't perfect, but malicious they're not.

As I wrote in this thread at an earlier time, my Netflix issue seems to have been fixed. How? I first killed the preview feature via my account then reinstalled the app. Initially, it didn't seem to work but soon afterwards the app started working nicely. I'm no longer experiencing the dramatic slowdown of the app. Also, be sure to occasionally quit running apps to give back memory to your Apple TV device.

Yes you said it, and we said that it is NOT fixed permanently so you can stop suggesting it as solution, because it is NOT.

Never say never but I doubt Apple does it purposely messing it up, because Im sure Netflix is one of the most used app in AppleTV. That said it does not have problem with PS4, PC, or Samsung TV from devices I have.

So again, it should be fixed.

I recently started to experience the same problem and it is not limited to Netflix. Other apps like Disney+ and NHK WORLD slow down or hang. Restarting Apple TV clears the problem, but slow down occurs again after awhile. It is not clear to me whether I am running an app that has a defect that is causing the system to become unstable or whether the Apple TV OS itself is causing the instability.

Going to try disabling background app refresh on all of my Apple TV apps to see if that helps.

I just wanted to add my voice to the list of people having this problem. ATV 4K, only three items in my list, but while browsing titles it would gradually slow down to being essentially frozen. This has been going on for over a year for me, but since I cancel Netflix frequently when I run out of things to watch, I thought nothing of it.

Saw it was *still* going on today, decided to contact Netflix customer support. Got the absolute RUDEST customer service rep I’ve had in years (and for America these days, that’s saying something!). Her name was Kim. She basically said I was lying about the problem, and to consult the troubleshooting page before bothering her again. I told her he troubleshooting page... the one she JUST referred me to... only said, “We are currently researching this error. To help us investigate, please  contact customer service.” This is when she called me a liar and said there were other options there.

So I cancelled Netflix again, probably for good this time. Shortly afterwards I saw somebody on here mention that you can now turn off auto-previews, so I gave it a try, and hey... it worked! Can browse more than twenty shows without the whole thing freezing up. That’ll be convenient... until this month’s service runs out, and I never touch Netflix ever again. If only they had updated their support page or trained their customer support team, they would have kept a customer.

Seriously, with all the streaming competition now, they have GOT to get better support, both for fixing their buggy software AND for dealing with customers.
