iTunes unresponsive; playback stops intermittently

I'm running iTunes 12.9.5.5, and recently my iTunes will become unresponsive and playback stops intermittently. I've tried restarting iTunes, restarted iMac, but to no avail. Help!

iTunes Freezing Constantly Hey everyone! I'm running into an issue with iTunes on my iMac (Late 2015). When I open the program, it just freezes and I get the spinning rainbow wheel. That leads to me having to Force Quit iTunes. It's been happening for a few days now, but nothing has changed on my computer. No major upgrades or new software installations. I've tried resetting the SMC but I've had no luck getting iTunes to work properly. I don't believe that upgrading my OS to Monterey would be a good longterm solution, just because I'm not sure how well it would run on my machine, even though the upgrade is available. I'm currently running Mojave. Has this happened to any of you at all? Is there any fix I can apply? I miss listening to music as I work. :(

iTunes works then starts distorting and pausing I saw this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250886185 on Windows iTunes working and then starting to distort. I am running iTunes Version 12.10.10.2 on a new PC (one month or so) running Windows 10 Pro Version 1909. iTunes worked fine until today and then began distorting the audio and messing up the playback (for example getting stuck or stopping completely). I have several options for audio speaker output. Same behaviour was observed on two different speaker options. I have tried running same music on Windows Media Player with no issues (as yet anyways). I observed the same issue on another computer and assumed the laptop had the issue. Rebooting temporarily resolved the issue, although today it only resolved it for a few minutes. iTunes settings are default.

You can try:

Launching iTunes in safe mode by holding down option+command as you start iTunes
Launching your Mac in in safe mode by holding down shift as you start it
Reinstalling Mojave.
