Slow iTunes start-up due to unwanted automatic CD access

I am having an issue with slow start-up in iTunes.

The issue appears to be that it is trying to read the CD/DVD that is in the drive when iTunes starts.

The CD/DVD is invariably not a music CD so this is just a waste of time/effort.

The same thing happens when I insert a new CD in the drive. iTunes automatically steps in, even though I don't want it to, and again this locks the iTunes UI while it is trying to access the CD.

I know how to tell iTunes to read the CD went I actually want it to do so. This automatic accessing of the CD is not useful.

Is there a way to stop iTunes from automatically trying to access the CD/DVD drive at start-up and/or on CD insert?

No. Don't leave optical discs in the drive.
