Carplay freezes when using VPN and signal switches (WiFi/3G/4G)

I usually leave my VPN connected at all times (for reference it is the NordVPN client).

I tend to use both Waze and Apple Music whilst travelling.

At certain points of the journey (where I know the phone signal will switch from Wifi to 3/4G or between 3 & 4G) Apple CarPlay will freeze, the map on Waze completely freezes, music stops playing (although the timer for the current track still continues to count up), for clarity I have tried this with both streamed and downloaded music.

Looks like when the phone is auto-switching connection it messes up what CarPlay is doing and hangs it.

Sometimes it'll sort itself out after 15-60 seconds, other times I have to disconnect the phone from the lightning cable to the car and reconnect.
