Transporting photos

My iphone has 2,899 images and videos (i can see this on the "all photos"). I wanted to transport them FROM my iphone TO my laptop. I wanted to do this because A) Security reasons and B) My phones storage is almost full.

I connected my iphone to my laptop via the charging lead.

I then go to (in files on the laptop) Apple iphone>Internal storage>DCIM and then i have multiple files: 100APPLE through to 103APPLE. All throughout them files i ONLY have 1,165 items (photos and videos). Where the **** are the rest of my pictures and stuff? Why cant it be like an android and have everything? I've tried doing it through icloud but god forbid we can "select all". Its tricky. Anyone have any advice?

iPhone 7, iOS 11
