iTunes Crashes upon clicking the iPhone "Summary" Button

I actually found a post from an issue identical to mine over on the iTunes for Mac section. However, because the person was using a Mac, the solutions were completely inapplicable to me. Here was their thread if anyone is interested.

Anyway, basically what is happening is that all of the sudden, now when I plug up my iPhone to my PC and attempt to click the little iPhone icon to view the Summary page, iTunes crashes and closes within a couple seconds of doing so. I've also tried this with my wife's phone and get the same behavior, though one time when I used hers instead of crashing, iTunes just froze.

It doesn't seem to have any issues loading the data that's on the iPhone. I can view everything on my phone from the left-hand menu and can manually run a sync using the menu bar, I just can't go to the summary page to change any Sync settings (which I need to do).

Because of this, I'm almost certain the issue is with iTunes itself. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes COMPLETELY multiple times, following the instructions found here to the letter. I've also tried the Windows Store version. I'm also an IT Professional, so I'm pretty savvy when it comes to this stuff, but I've tried every possible fix that Google could turn up. At this point I need the assistance of someone intimately familiar with the advanced troubleshooting of iTunes specifically.

I've also tried installing an older version of iTunes, forcing me to generate a new library.itl file, but the issue persists. It also happens regardless of which sync cable I use.

The only things that have changed since the last time I was able to sync my phone a month or two ago is that I've updated iTunes (though not many people seem to be experiencing these issues with the new version) and I recently switched to a new iCloud account on my phone, though since my wife's completely unmodified phone is doing the same thing, I'm assuming that's not it either.

Hardware/Software

  • My phone: iPhone XR
  • Wife's phone: iPhone X
  • PC Hardware: Intel Core i5 1.60 GHz | 8GB RAM
  • Windows 10 version: 1803
  • iTunes Version: 12.9.5.7

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

That type of issue might have been fixed in the past by resetting the iTunesPrefs.xml file. iTunes 12.5.1.21 introduced a change with the way preferences are saved. It seems that what used to be stored in:

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml

is now stored in a number of files spread amongst these folders:

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\Cookies

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences

C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\ByHost

(There could be others I haven't found.)

Try deleting the three first two which will also delete the third. Type %appdata%<return> in Explorer's address bar to reach the Roaming folder without having to display hidden folders. You'll need to set up any preferences in iTunes again, reconnect to your library if it is on a non-standard path, set options for Keep... and Copy... etc.

The Microsoft Store version of iTunes keeps the preferences somewhere in %userprofile% instead but you're still looking for the same collection of folders.

If iTunes is apparently installed correctly try the following in turn until iTunes opens/closes/reopens/connects to the store normally:

  • Remove any SD card that might be in a card reader.
  • Exit the BTTray.exe Bluetooth utility if installed.
  • Locate the shortcut for iTunes, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator. Doing this once may fix certain launch issues. Some users were finding that with the 12.6.1.25 build, for example, they had to use this method every time and modified the shortcut accordingly.
  • Try holding ctrl+shift as you launch iTunes so it opens in safe-mode. Again doing this once may sometimes help.
  • Try disconnecting your computer from the Internet before running iTunes.
  • Delete the iTunes shortcuts from the start menu, desktop, task bar, or similar, then repair iTunes from the programs and features control panel.
  • Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support and test the behaviour in a different user profile or with a different library. If the problem only exists in your profile it may be possible to delete some of the iTunes preference files which it would seem that iTunes may be choking on. We can go into details later if the issue is limited to your own profile.
  • Temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus and see if that has any impact on the behaviour.
  • See the second box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for detailed tear down and rebuild advice. Disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus software when reinstalling and run the installer as the administrator.
  • If you installed iTunes from the Microsoft Store you may find the traditional iTunesSetup.exe installer works better for you.
  • Or see the iTunes installers section of the troubleshooting tip and reinstall the last version that worked correctly for you. Note that iTunes 12.6.5.3 or iTunes 12.8.0.150 are the minimum versions required for devices running iOS 12.

I've confirmed its something with my PC profile. I created a new user and opened iTunes, then clicked the iPhone summary button and was able to use it with no issues. So it sounds like we need to start exploring that 7th bullet point.

What else is there to get rid of after a complete uninstall of iTunes? Where does it store that profile data? It actually makes sense because the first time I started iTunes in the new profile, I was getting prompts that I wasn't prompted with in my current profile, suggesting that somewhere in the PC it's remembering that I've used iTunes before.

How do we go about clearing that stuff?

Apologies, didn't see it in this thread. Nothing in particular jumps out at me from the log. Going back to the last build that worked for you on that hardware may be a workaround. When going back to a recent build you may be able to restore a database from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder rather than starting over.

Come to think of it another user posted recently that clearing the iPod Photo Cache from the folder selected for syncing with their device fixed a crashing issue they were having. You could try that first.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I just tried deleting the entire folders for those locations with no luck. Even followed the steps here to get every trace or mention of iTunes off my machine. No luck with that either. I did manage to track down an crash log. I wasn't sure where to start looking, but I've attached it to this reply. Hopefully it means something to you. At this point, I'm not even worried about keeping any settings at all. As long as I've got my music collection I'll be good.
