I have used the function to screenshot a portion of the screen and the only place I can find it is on the clipboard. Most Mac users tell me that their screenshots save directly to their desktop. Has anyone else had this issue?

The default location may have been changed using a third party utility, such as OnyX. You can reset it to the desktop by launching Terminal from the Utilities folder. Copy/paste the following command:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture ~/Desktop
If the save location had been changed, this will reset it to your desktop.
I do not use drop box. But I see how One Drive and Drop box could have the option to save them.
Safemode doesn't work either. I don't seem to have that file in my user account. hmmm.

Ok. I found the folder and going into safe mode to try this step.
I moved the files to the desktop and it still won’t work.
At this point I’m willing to upgrade to Mojave. 😭 I appreciate all your help.
That won't help as an upgrade leaves all user preferences and settings intact. You'll have the same issue in Mojave.
It's all a matter of finding what in your user account is causing this.
That it doesn't work in Safe Mode narrows the problem down quite a bit. Only certain drivers and fonts are allowed to load. No third party stuff at all.
So, that almost exclusively points to a preference.
In Safe Mode, move these files from the Preferences folder of your user account to the desktop and restart:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
It's possible you have a third party app installed that is using some of the same shortcuts, overriding the system.
Create a test account and login to it. Do screen shots work there as expected?
Screenshots are not being saved to my MacBook Pro at all and never have been.
