iTunes starting up and playing random songs on its own!!!

After searching for a while I found many threads on this subject, with people left hanging with no solution. The suggestions to fix in previous threads didn't work for them and don't for me. I have no speakers connected to the Mac mini, have all latest updates on everything, remotes turned off on iTunes etc. I do have an Apple TV but it is not related to that. It has even suddenly started playing music when I am asleep in bed in the middle of the night. no one else in the apartment at the time. This problem has been going on , on and off for nearly a year I would guess. Stops for a while then starts again for no reason. no new apps on my Mac etc etc.

Has anyone found the problem yet, some of the threads about this go back 4 or 5 years.

Mac mini, macOS 10.13

It's probably not related to the specific problem you're experiencing, but get rid of Avast. It's basically worthless and will cause far more problems than it solves.

On to the problem you're experiencing, I suspect the IR port is picking up stray signals that it's interpreting as commands from a remote.

Make sure you don't have any remotes paired with the machine and just for grins, cover the IR receiver with a piece of electrical tape or a post it note or something just to make sure no signal can reach it.

Still holding breath, but so far so good. Not only with the iTunes problem but my Mac mini had been running hot on occasions too, even when supposed to be asleep. ( did mention this in earlier post which was followed by the kind suggestions to delete Teamviewer and Avast ) This has now stopped too. I Couldn't see a reason for spiking cpu usage but it Am beginning to think that possibly Team viewer was the culprit for all this, though how an app like that can affect iTunes I have no idea.

It can't have been Avast as this was installed well after the problem started and I was trying to find things to solve it. One of my thoughts being that perhaps a virus was hidden somewhere waiting to pounce on a friends PC when I emailed them or something....

So the only major thing I changed was to delete Team viewer, perhaps that in conjunction with everything else I tweaked did the job.. I'll leave that thought for those more informed than I....

Again I thank you all for your time and help and I am pleased to let you know that it looks like you have, between you, solved it. One happy and relieved Mac mini owner here now....

Hi Lynnspain,

Thank you for those additional details and for testing the issue in another account.

Since iTunes hasn't randomly played music in another account, you're right, it seems to be related to the settings in your regular user account. Let's further isolate this by returning to your regular account and starting up your Mac in safe mode. You'll want to allow your Mac to remain in safe mode to see if iTunes plays music on its own. Here are the steps to start up in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

Reply back with whether or not you experience the issue again.

Take care!

Could you have anything that could be putting out infra red control signals? (You could disable IR remote via the system preferences security pane.) A cat that walks over your keyboard? Stuck keys? (Is your keyboard wired or wireless?) Does the problem recur if the keyboard is disconnected or turned off? Have you checked your Mac for malware with say Malwarebytes?

Hi Lynnspain,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with iTunes randomly playing music on your Mac. I'd love to provide a step to further isolate this.

To start, try logging out of your regular user account and open a test user account. Let's see if the issue occurs while you're logged in there. Take a look here for the steps to create a test user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

If you're still experiencing this in the test user account, reply back with:

-which macOS version you're using

-which iTunes version you're using

Good luck!

HELLO Joseph,

Sorry for the delay in coming back with more info. After my post on the 14th July iTunes stopped playing up so I couldn't do the safe mode test. Then a few days ago it suddenly started again. I can not think of anything I have done to trigger it. Plus it was worse this time, before it would open iTunes randomly and start playing songs. This time it opened iTunes and kept trying to play the same song, a few seconds into the song it would stop think for a while then restart the song again and again and again....

So I closed my Mac, started up n safe mode and the same thing.

Before closing down the Mac and opening in safe mode I had left iTunes in Audio books and with any volume turned off to stop being woken in the middle of the night. it couldn't play anything. ( I don't have any audio books)

I shut down iTunes and the computer to restart in safe mode and see what happens.

In safe mode, iTunes after a while opened itself and of course could not play anything as I don't have any Audi books. When I switched to songs the iTunes window kept reloading itself. I noticed My cursor was in the search bar, no idea why, I clicked on the main part of the window and the reloading seemed to stop. Now this has made me think as I use my calendar a lot, and often have to search for events in the past, in recent weeks, the same thing has been happening there also. The search results keep reloading for a while. However I just tried to replicate that in safe mode and just get 'no results' showing. I know there are results on the search so. I have no idea what this means.

This seems like a software problem to me. Do you have any ideas?

Thank you tuingtest2 for your help.

IN answer to your queries:-

  • not aware of any infra red control signals but at your suggestion have disabled IR remote now.
  • NO cats lol
  • no stuck keys
  • Keyboard is wired
  • haven't tried disconnecting the keyboard will give that a go tonight.
  • Downloaded Avast and ran a full scan, there were some files that have now been locked in the chest.

Will give it a few days and see how we go after these few changes. Have done a reboot since the scan and so far so good. but this silly problem does come and go making it so hard to test.

will be back in a few days with an update. again thank you.

Hello Alex_x1

Thank you for responding and forgive my delay in following your instructions.

I created a test account and so far nothing has happened re iTunes, I did realise after a day that I hadn't logged into iTunes or downloaded any music on the test account so there would be nothing to play anyway ..... 😳. I downloaded a few songs from the cloud and in the last 24 hours still no unwanted plays. Trouble is on my own account, this quirk of iTunes can go away all on its own, then suddenly start up again for no apparent reason. Nor does it happen continuously, it can behave for hours then all of a sudden when the Mac is in sleep mode, perhaps all day and night, when I wake it up the next morning I see iTunes has opened and tried to play music, as I have iTunes set to play via my Apple TV ( which is linked to a different router ) it can't find the TV and gives me a message to say so.. This way I am not disturbed in the middle of the night.

my Mac mini (2010 with a new hard drive Oct 2017, old hard drive died after a High Sierra update )

-Mac is running High Sierra v 10.13.6

-iTunes v 12.8.2.3

again thank you for your time.

Hello, its happened again, after behaving for 3 days I come home from the gym to find iTunes playing away. This is really frustrating. Can anyone help me further please. I have done all the things suggested Don't know what else to do as I cant un instal and rental iTunes to see if this fixes it. I am trying to remember when this started and if it was after an iTunes update....
