signing into iCloud

I'm in a loop when signing into iCloud (on my Macbook Pro using High Sierra 10.13.6) with a repetition of entering id, password and then the latest code sent to my phone. Obviously my id and password are ok as I managed to sign into this page.

What happens when you try? Error message(s)?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin

( a ) Open system preferences > iCloud > the box for keychain is checked , click on options , click on change security code .

( b ) Click on security code > enter new code in the fields and click on next , you have to enter the new code for the second time and click on next .

In the next window the country code is written , enter your trusted mobile number ( it could be a new number …….and click on done .

Again enter your Apple ID password to update your account settings and click on ok , hence the code is changed , so write down this code in a safe place .

You have signed out completely the iCloud account from system preferences > iCloud , it depends upon you again to sign with Apple ID say created with 2FA , or another id say example1@icloud.com or an Apple ID say with example2@gmail.com or with other mail services and these id don't match / similar with the primary Apple ID .

For that you need a iCloud Keychain verification code , if you don't have this code in records an iPhone is needed to set up iCloud Keychain .

So , what to do ? you must have a trusted iPhone to set up iCloud Keychain or code in previous records , you have only one option to use iPhone .

See this link https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-13681

These points are important .

( f ) In system preferences > iCloud the keychain box will get unchecked , so tap the keychain box a pop up window will appear to set up iCloud Keychain on this Mac , request approval from one of your other devices using iCloud Keychain .

( g ) Three options will be shown ( 1 ) use code ( 2 ) cancel ( 3 ) request approval .

If you click on use code - this can be filled up if you had in previous records .

If you click on request approval - need an iPhone .

So without adopting any one method iCloud Keychain can't be set up , so the solution is arrange an iPhone .

In this article also https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT202861

See that both iPhone and Mac are simultaneously compulsory required to set up iCloud Keychain , its your choice to select any one .

  • Get a Random Security Code.
  • Don't Create Security Code. If you don't create an iCloud Security Code, then your iCloud Keychain is stored locally on your Mac instead of Apple's servers, and will update only across your approved devices.

If you create a random security code - the Mac will generate at random code that could be alphanumeric .

And if you don't create a security code the passwords will be stored locally in keychain and not on iCloud servers .

So, the basic theme is need an iPhone to set up code / or some Mac users create the codes as I mentioned in the above post and utilise it for settings up iCloud keychain .

Thanks for the help. I tried both options.

Another admin user - this worked until I was asked for a security code which I don't have. The alternative was to go to keychain on one of my other Mac devices to approve the laptop. I can't do that yet as I'm out of the country and won't have access to them until next week.

Safe Mode - this just put me back into the loop.
