Stolen iphone message on the screen

I ve been stolen my phone. I entered the icloud and put it on lost mode and send a message with a number to call me. I want to know in which moment will the message appear on the iphone screen? When the person turn it on? does the iphone have to be online to receive this message? Because it was "airplane mode" and wifi on when it was stolen....
