If you press shift+command+5, it produces a selection box with grips around it that you can drag to effectively crop your intended screen shot.

For an existing screen shot, open it in Preview, click the markup icon on the toolbar, and then select the left-most icon's rectangular selection. Now, drag around the area you want left after you click the now available crop button on the toolbar, and once the crop remains, save it in your preferred image format:

Create the screenshot. And it should appear on the bottom right of your screen. Click on it and it should open an editing menu. Here you can also finalize it. Cropping tool should be on the right of the menu. See screenshot.
